Republicans begin filing for primary

County Democrats stay course by holding off, but have until Jan. 4

12:27 AM CST on Saturday, December 5, 2009

By Bj Lewis / Staff Writer

After two days of filing, Denton County Republicans have a long list of candidates in line for various seats while county Democrats have none.

Twenty-seven Republicans filed for spots on the March 2 primary ballot, including four candidates for County Court at Law No. 1.

Judge Darlene Whitten plans to leave at the end of her term.

Three have filed for the statutory probate court seat, as Judge Don Windle plans to retire.

George Mitcham, 41, an assistant district attorney, and three private-practice lawyers — Kimberly McCary, 42; Chris Ventura, 52; and Chance Oliver, 39 — have filed to take Whitten’s seat.

Lawyers Gilland Chenault, 31; Robert Ramirez, 38; and Bonnie Robison, 54, each filed paperwork with the GOP to replace Windle.

All other Republican seats remained uncontested Friday afternoon.

“We’re pleased with the way the filings are going,” said Diane Edmondson, chairwoman for the Denton County Republican Party. “We’ve got, as always, a great slate of candidates we will be putting forth.”

Edmondson has filed for re-election to her seat as well.

“We’re going to have some very spirited primaries and we’re looking forward to that,” she said.

Democratic Party Chairwoman Phyllis Wolper said Democrats tend to file late in the filing period, which ends Jan. 4.

“I believe many of our candidates are following that tradition,” she said. “We have set up appointment times for them to file late in the period and expect most, if not all, to file in the last few days.”

Wolper said that while they won’t have the number of candidates they had in 2008, the Democratic Party will still have a number of candidates planning to run.

“We have a number of people out gathering signatures on petitions and working on their filings.”
