Carolyn Green, whose dedication to Lake Dallas and its schools made her one of its most beloved residents, died at home Wednesday. She was 80.

Green volunteered for dozens of civic causes and school functions, from serving on the city’s Community Development Corporation to riding the bus with the Lake Dallas High School cheerleaders to out-of-town football games.

The city dedicated its new butterfly garden in City Park, the “Flutterby Garden,” to Green on April 19.

“I’m so happy we were able to do that for her,” Mayor Marjory Johnson said.

Green was the chairwoman of the city’s Community Development Corporation from 2003 until she resigned earlier this year, according to City Secretary Beverly Weikum. Most recently, Green served on the Parks and Recreation Board from October 2001 to October 2003, and on the Appeals Board since July 2005. She also served on the Planning and Zoning Commission, Keep Lake Dallas Beautiful and the Board of Adjustments.

“There isn’t a board or commission she didn’t serve on, except the City Council,” Johnson said.

Green was an honorary member of the Lake Dallas Yell Raisers and could be seen on the sidelines at many football games, pounding on drums and blowing air horns.

She also had arranged for a team breakfast every morning on game days for the past 20 years. The meals took place at various off-campus sites, and all were welcome, according to Lake Dallas head football coach Mike Young.

“She’d get people to come and talk to the kids. Sometimes she’d sing to them or give them a pep talk,” Young said. “Like the Texas A&M bonfire, that’s part of what football is here.”

School officials held a pep rally-style memorial service for Green at Lake Dallas High School’s Falcon Stadium on Friday night.

Members of the Lake Dallas Falcons football team also will serve as pallbearers at Green’s funeral service at 2 p.m. today at Lake Shores Baptist Church, with the Rev. Daniel Patrick officiating. Burial will follow at Swisher Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Carolyn Green Memorial Scholarship of the Lake Cities Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 1294, Lake Dallas, TX 75065.

Green’s first husband, B.L. Rankin Jr., and her second husband, Vaughn Ray Green, preceded her in death.

Green is survived by her children, Barbara Jo Burns of Keller and Thomas Edward of Lake Dallas; two sisters, Pauline James of Dallas and Geneva Boydston of Denton; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
