Five now charged in hazing incident

11:41 PM CST on Wednesday, December 2, 2009

Police have charged three more members of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity at the University of North Texas in an alleged hazing incident.

The charges followed the UNT Police Department’s investigation into the alleged hazing of 12 new fraternity pledges in October.

Terry Lee Lewis Jr., 24, and Emmanuel Charles Bradford, 23, were arrested in November on charges of hazing, causing severe bodily injury, for allegedly forcing new pledges to take “wood six times,” and then striking the fraternity pledges with a wooden paddle on the buttocks six times, according to arrest affidavits.

One victim had visible welts, scratches and bruising on his chest, buttocks and back area, which he told police were caused by members of the fraternity’s Denton chapter, who repeatedly slapped him and other pledges with open hands, an affidavit states.

The incident happened on or about Oct. 10, according to the affidavit, and was reported to UNT police last month.

Both Lewis and Bradford were each charged with an additional count of hazing in November after a full police investigation and have posted bail on those charges, according to jail logs.

As the investigation continued, UNT police charged Charles Adam Sneed, 27, with two counts of hazing after participating in the initiation of Kappa Alpha Psi pledges and have issued a warrant for his arrest, said Ed Reynolds, deputy chief of the UNT Police Department.

Sneed was originally arrested and charged with evading arrest after police said he jumped from a two-story residence when Lewis was arrested last month, an affidavit states.

Police also issued a warrant for Raymond Deshun Brown, 22, also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, for two counts of hazing. Reynolds said Brown also participated in the initiation activities.

Jamal Malick Petillo, 21, was present during one night of hazing activities and was charged with one count of hazing, according to an affidavit.

Petillo turned himself in to authorities last week and posted bail, jail records state.

In the UNT policy manual, hazing is described as any intentional, knowing or reckless act, either on or off campus, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging to an organization.

A full investigation into the incident will also be conducted by the UNT Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities, university spokeswoman Deborah Leliaert said.

The fraternity is temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

At this point, UNT police do not anticipate filing additional hazing charges, Reynolds said.

“We forwarded this case to the district attorney’s office for prosecution,” he said.
