Blotter: Aubrey woman charged with dog theft
12:53 AM CDT on Saturday, September 13, 2008
Denton County sheriff’s deputies arrested a woman who allegedly reneged on an offer to give away her two Cairn terrier puppies and attempted to steal another dog on Thursday.
A man who lives in the Justin area called to report that the woman, who lives in the Aubrey area, posted a notice about two free puppies online at Craigslist.org. He responded and met the woman in a Denton restaurant parking lot to pick up the pups. She offered to let him buy the registration papers on the dogs, but he declined.
A few hours later, the woman drove up to the man’s home. She said she had changed her mind and wanted the Cairns back. He said no. The woman began yelling and cursing the man and his wife, according to the sheriff’s report.
He threatened to call 911, and she left. But she called his home several times after that demanding the dogs.
The man reported the calls, and a deputy talked to the woman and told her to stop bothering the man. She said she wanted her dogs back and would get them back, according to the report. The deputy advised her to take the problem to justice of the peace court.
Still later that night, the man looked out his window and saw the woman’s van outside his fence. The woman was taking his 9-month-old hybrid wolf dog off its chain inside his fence and putting it into her van. He called the sheriff’s office to report a theft in progress.
Deputies found the woman’s van. The woman and a female relative were in the van, along with the dog. They claimed they had procured the dog from a rescue group and denied stealing it from the victim.
A sheriff’s supervisor arrived and told the woman she had stolen the dog from the victim’s yard. She denied it. He repeated his charge. She denied it again. She told the officer, “You can disagree with me all you want but it doesn’t matter.”
He took her to jail on theft charges.
