Janet Louise Adams

Janet Louise Adams went to be with the Lord on November 28, 2009 after a year long battle with renal cell carcinoma cancer.

A service will be held on Tuesday December 1, 2009 at 5 pm at Southmont Baptist Church, 2801 Pennsylvania Ave. Larry Reynolds will officiate.

Janet was born on February 26, 1950in Kansas City, Missouri to Richard and Mary Powell. She devoted herself to teaching elementary students for 30 years. She was also an active member of Southmont Baptist Church and enjoyed shopping, movies, and making people laugh and have a good time. She will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends.

Janet is survived by her daughters, Shelley and Sarah Kennedy; granddaughter, Malorie Kennedy; mother, Mary Powell; brother, Don Powell; sister-in-law, Terry Powell; nephew, Adam Powell; and niece, Diane Powell.

The family is requesting in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Please contact 1-800-227-2345 and leave donations in honor of Janet Adams.

Tommy Eugene Cogdell

Tommy Eugene Cogdell, age 59, of Saint Jo, TX passed away at 8:40pm Friday, November 27, 2009 at his home near Capps Corner, Texas.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at the Friendship Church in Saint Jo, TX with Ronnie Hale officiating. . Services are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Saint Jo. Burial will follow in the Mountain Park Cemetery in Saint Jo, TX. A visitation is set for 6 – 8 pm Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at the funeral home.

Born September 8, 1950 in Denton, Tommy grew up and attended school there. He enlisted into the U.S. Army at the age of 17. He served a total of three years in the Army, with a tour in Vietnam during the war. He received an honorable discharge in July 1971 and was transferred to the Army reserves at that time.

After being discharged from the Army, Tommy worked as a painter and wall coverer in the construction business. He married Penny Hacker in Callisburg on August 17, 1996. They became the parents of two daughters and a son.

Tommy was one of seven sons born to Woodrow and Mildred Cogdell. He received an Associate Degree in Computer Technology from San Jacinto College.

He was a member of the Local Painters Union.

Tommy, Penny and their children attended Friendship Church. He really enjoyed the family and friends and cherished playing with the “kids”. He was a hunter, fisherman, outdoorsman and, in earlier life, loved playing baseball. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Penny Annette Hacker Cogdell, Saint Jo, TX, two daughters, Brittany Nicole Hacker Cogdell, Saint Jo, TX, Nevaeh Marie Hacker Cogdell, Saint Jo, TX son, Travis Lee Hacker Cogdell, Saint Jo, TX. Mother, Mildred Bishop Gilbreath, Denton, TX. Five brothers, Bill Cogdell, Denton, TX, Danny Jo Cogdell and wife Sue Ann, Gordonville, TX, Jack Cogdell, Denton, TX, Buford Cogdell, Denton, TX, Larry Cogdell and wife Norma, Denton, TX. Parents-in-law, Kenneth and Wanda Hacker, also several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by, his father, Woodrow Cogdell, brother, Fred Cogdell, nephews, Stephen and Michael Cogdell.

Pallbearers are Billy Cogdell, Danny Joe Cogdell, Buford Cogdell, Jack Cogdell, Larry Cogdell, Darryl Russell. Honorary Pallbearers are George Hacker, James Hacker, Gary Hacker, Miachel Tidmore

Brooke Howard Shirley

Brooke Howard Shirley, 94, of Granbury, passed away November 28, 2009 after a brief illness.

Brooke was born September 12, 1915 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Vaughn and Grace (Gast) Shirley. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps and graduated with a Master's degree from the University of Iowa. He was married for 60 years to Jean Surber Shirley who preceded him in death. He was a construction engineer in Dallas for many years. As a member of Central Christian Church of Dallas and the Shank Class for over 50 years, he was friend, teacher, Elder and Board Member and served with integrity and leadership. He was Chairman of the first Happy Hills Charity Golf Classic at Pecan Plantation, an annual event that continues today. An avid golfer, Brooke shot under his age at 75 and proudly displayed trophies for several holes in one.

But he always said that his greatest accomplishments were his four capable and devoted daughters, his Shirley girls. We loved our father dearly and will miss him, his exuberant love of life and great sense of humor. He was a wonderful influence on our lives and those of our families and cannot be replaced. We are grateful to have had him for so many years.

Survived by wife of 7 years, Mildred O. Shirley and his daughters Leslie and Charles Kemp, (David), Rebecca and Mike Roberson (Chris, Mary, Brooke, Jenny), Julia and Sam Smith (Cody), Shannon Shirley-Robbins and Reggie Robbins (Jett) and 6 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 pm Tuesday December 1, 2009 at Roselawn Memorial Park, Denton, TX.

Memorials may be made to the Happy Hill Farm Academy, 3846 North Highway 144, Granbury, TX 76048.

Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust St., Denton, TX is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Mac Sweatman Sr.

Charlie Mac Sweatman Sr., 66, of Denton passed away Sunday at the Atrium Hospital in Corinth.

He was born Jan. 24, 1943 in Denton to Ernest P. and Ruth Mills Sweatman (Smart). The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009 from 6 – 8 pm for visitation. Graveside Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Sweatman is survived by his mother Ruth Smart of Denton, sons, Gary Sweatman of Denton, Tony Sweatman and Robert Sweatman of Ft. Worth, Charlie Sweatman of Denton, brother, Don Sweatman of Dallas, and 10 Grandchildren.

His father, E.P. Sweatman, preceded him in death.

Mary Margaret Foster Tritt

Mary Margaret Foster Tritt, 90, of Denton passed away Monday, November 30, 2009 at Denton Regional Medical Center. Services are pending with Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home Denton.
