Mary June Impson

Mary June Impson was born November 28, 1930 in Oklahoma. Her physical life ended January 27, 2008.

She took her Doctor of Education degree in Educational Curriculum at the University of Kansas in 1975, and moved to Denton in 1976 to join the faculty in the Department of Home Economics and Consumer Sciences, later to become the Department of Family Sciences, at Texas Woman’s University. After twenty-two years she retired, as Professor Emeritus, and began devoting her time to her passion for art and painting. She was a longtime and active member of VAST, the Visual Arts Society of Texas, and considered herself a constructionist, both as a person and as a painter. Her watercolor, collage, and pastel paintings, according to June, emerged from a synthesis of self, water, paint, paper, and time. Many of her emotion–filled paintings began as sketches and color studies from her travels and were later completed in her studio at home. Sharing art with others brought her much joy.

June is survived by her precious sons, Loren Cail Impson and Keiller Boytt Impson; her beloved husband, Billy Roy Switzer; her dear grandchildren, Joshua Impson, David Impson, Davina Valiente, Sarah Jane and Daniel Impson; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held February 16, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the Cole Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 201 S. Locust St. in Denton, Texas.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Heifer International, P.O. Box 8058, Little Rock, Arkansas 72203-8058 or to The Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST), Box 1281, Denton, Texas 76202.
