Dr. Bobby Short Thomas, 92, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2008 at her residence. Bobby Thomas was born May 10, 1916 in Bulcher, Texas to Rose Scanland Short and Kearn Franklin Short. She graduated from Gainesville High School at age 16 and then attended TSCW, now TWU, and graduated with a degree in medical technology. After a brief career as a medical technologist in Greenville, Texas, she started Baylor Medical School and graduated in May of 1943. She married her lifelong friend and colleague J. David Thomas in March of 1941. They completed their residency in March of 1944. David Thomas was an Army medical officer in Europe during WW II while Bobby Thomas became the Dallas County Medical Director. In March of 1944, Bobby Thomas moved to Denton to become the physician at TWU. She served in this capacity for five years before retiring to become a full-time wife and mother.

She was very active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts as a leader and camp physician. During the time her children attended Denton Public Schools, she was involved in PTA activities and as a classroom volunteer. Plants and gardening were a passion she carried throughout her life. She was a member of the Gay Gardeners Club as well as the Native Plant Society. She had many interests; she was an avid oil painter and enjoyed her group of friends who called themselves the Rembrandt Club. The Thomases also enjoyed being with their friends in the Denton Travel Club. Bobby Thomas volunteered her time with the Denton Christian Preschool for many years. Above all, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother extraordinaire to her grandchildren.

Her husband, J. David Thomas, preceded Bobby in death. She is survived by: her three children, Anne Thomas Banks and husband Tim Banks of Brunswick, Maine, David Mark Thomas and wife Heather of Era, Texas, and Cynthia Thomas and partner Tom Beitinger of Denton; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
