Jefferson D. Scott

Jefferson D. Scott, Jr., 79 of Denton passed away Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.He was born November 26, 1929 in Green Co., MS to Jefferson Davis Scott and Eula Mae Wallace Scott.He served in the U.S. Army during WW II.He married Willie Lee Lamar on May 19, 1954 in Columbus, MS.She preceded him death on April 10, 1997.He was a retired truck driver.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 12, 2009 from 5 – 7 p.m. with a memorial service at 6:15 at DeBerry Funeral Directors.

He is survived by his daughter, Lesa Mash and husband Robbie of Krum; grandson, Jack Mash of Krum; granddaughter, Jayme Aukerman and husband Michael of Denton; great grandson, Jacob Aukerman; brother, Charles Allen Scott of AL.He is preceded in death by her parents, wife and sister, Virginia Scott.

Richard Lowe Winstead of Lake Forest Village in Denton, Texas, died November 09, 2009 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Denton.He was born April 08, 1926 in Scott County, Mississippi, to the late Claude Walter and Susan Ada Cooper Winstead.

Following his graduation from East Central Junior College in 1944, he joined the United States Marine Corps.He was stationed in the Pacific in World War II, including service on the island of Guam, and served until June 06, 1946.Upon his return from World War II, he graduated from Mississippi College with distinction in 1948.

Richard began his career as a Chemist with The Texas Company (later to become Texaco) in 1948 in Port Arthur, Texas.There he met a school teacher, Anne Katherine Rike (Katie) of Haskell, Texas.They were married July 03, 1955.

In December of 1961, Richard was transferred to Texaco’s Research Center in Beacon, New York.During his tenure in New York he worked with Texaco’s Supply and Distribution Division at Texaco’s Headquarters in New York City.In August of 1979 he transferred back to the Texaco Research Lab in Port Arthur where he worked until his retirement in 1985.

Upon retiring, Richard was elected as an elder at his church, Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Port Arthur, and volunteered at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont.

Richard’s competitiveness and love of games converged when he entered his first bridge tournament in 1991.Duplicate bridge then became his specialty.He won the United States Rookie of the Year (ACBL) title that same year and became a Life Master in 1993.From then on, his mission was to partner with Katie and help her earn her Life Master award.That turned into an 8 year project, accomplished in 2001.

In 2004, Richard and Katie moved to Denton to be near their son John, of Trophy Club, Texas.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Odell and John William; and one sister, Thelma Thornton.His survivors include: his wife of 54 years, Anne Katherine Rike Winstead; his son Stephen and wife Amy, of Houston, Texas; his son John and wife Windi of Trophy Club, Texas.He is also survived by seven grandchildren:Andrew and Daniel Winstead, Devon James, Cora, Seth and Jessica Winstead and Dakota James.He is also survived by a sister, Josephine Roberts of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; a brother-in-law, Curtis Thornton of Morton, Mississippi; a sister-in-law, Mildred Winstead of Townsend, Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 12, at 10:00 am in Cole Chapel, First United Methodist Church, 201 S. Locust Street in Denton.A reception will follow in the Flinn Hall Lounge.A burial service will follow at Willow Cemetery in Haskell, Texas at 4:00 pm.Both services will be led by the Rev. Michael James Winstead, Richard’s great-nephew.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village, 3901 Montecito, Denton, Texas or the United Methodist Women of Denton’s First United Methodist Church.

Commander Russell L. Bufkins

Commander Russell L. Bufkins, USN – Ret., of Denton, Texas passed away Monday, October 26, 2009 at Denton Regional Medical Center after a short illness.He was 89.

A memorial service will be Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors.

He is survived by sons William and Jim of Denton, Texas, daughter-in-law Samra Bufkins, his sister Ruth Stevens of Boonville, IN and his loving companion Joan Ingoldsby of Denton.He was preceded in death by a daughter Dorothy, sisters Esther Girdley and Mae Day, brothers Edward and Wilborn, and his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Anne Clewlow Bufkins of Evansville, Indiana.

A career Navy public affairs officer and Boy Scout public relations executive, Cdr. Bufkins was born in Boonville, Indiana on January 3, 1920, to the late Cress and Nellie McNeeley Bufkin.A football letterman, he graduated from Boonville High School in 1938, attended the University of Evansville from 1939 to 1941. He received an AB in 1947 and an MA in Journalism in 1951 from Indiana University – Bloomington, and a Doctor of Law degree in 1955 from American University, Washington, DC.

Commissioned as Ensign, USNR in 1941, he attended Cornell’s naval engineering program, serving on a minesweeper.Assigned to Admiral Halsey’s staff in 1942 as Flag Secretary for Commodore Oliver Kessing, Commander, Ulithi Atoll, he escorted celebrities and war correspondents, including Jack Dempsey, Gertrude Lawrence, Victor Mature, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., Bobby Riggs, AP photographer Joe Rosenthal and legendary war correspondent Ernie Pyle.Promoted to Lt. Commander at age 24, he went to Japan on the Battleship Texas to coordinate post-surrender public affairs activities.After release from active duty, he completed his education, and taught radio and TV at the University of Miami before being called up for the Korean conflict.

In 1951, he served as Commanding Officer, US Naval Training Center, Colorado Springs.In 1953 he became director of the Navy Public Affairs Reserve Program at the Pentagon, training more than 500 officers, including publisher Walter Annenberg, Walter Winchell, actors Glenn Ford and Jackie Cooper. Promoted to Commander in January, 1954, he was transferred to Naples, Italy to head up contingency planning for NATO Allied Forces Southern Europe in Italy, Greece and Turkey.In 1958, he was sent to Beirut, Lebanon, to coordinate press relations for the Amphibious Force in the US intervention in the revolution, involving 500 news correspondents.In 1959, he joined the Pentagon staff of Admiral John S. McCain, Jr. to direct the Navy’s relations with magazine and book editors, publishers, and news syndicates, where he was successful in placing ideas for Navy related books and magazine articles.

From 1963-65 he served as Public Affairs Officer for the 10th Naval District in San Juan, Puerto Rico and from 1965-66 served as PAO for the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois.In 1966 he was transferred to New York City to start up a Navy media relations office on 57th Street to manage Navy public affairs for 13 states.

Bufkins moved to Princeton, N.J. and retired from the Navy in 1967.He joined the national staff of the Boy Scouts of America in New Brunswick, N.J. as head of media relations.When the Boy Scouts moved to Irving, Texas, in 1979 he was promoted to National Director of Public Relations.He created award winning campaigns for the Boy Scouts, including the “Famous Scouts” series featuring President Gerald R. Ford, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Hank Aaron and Astronaut James Lovell; and TV public service announcements featuring Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang, which he coordinated with the late cartoonist Charles Schulz.

He also planned and supervised media relations and advertising, conducted public relations training for Scout executives, and was the BSA’s media spokesperson.At national and international events he established and managed news operations from news bureaus which he staffed with working radio, TV, and newspaper volunteers.These events included national conventions, national Scout Jamborees, and international Jamborees in Norway and Japan.A self-confessed name dropper, he proudly displayed a long list of celebrities he has met at Scouting events, such as Presidents Johnson, Ford, Carter, and Nixon, British PM Harold Wilson, movie stars William Holden, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Jimmy Stewart, Japanese Emperor Akihito, and King Carl Gustaf of Sweden.

A resident of Denton since 1979, he was active in cultural affairs as a supporter of the UNT Opera Theatre, the Denton Bach Society, Greater Denton Arts Council, Denton Community Chorus, Music Theatre of Denton, the Denton Community Theatre and Denton Community Band.He also served as president of the Friends of the Library and the Denton County Genealogical Society.For the past several years, he has directed a duplicate bridge game at the Denton Senior Center which grew from two tables to seven or more.He also directed the Denton Tennis Association and a fundraising campaign to build the Goldfield Tennis Center at Northlakes Park, resulting in national recognition by J.C. Penny.

During his long career in media and public relations, Bufkins was a member of several organizations which included The Public Relations Society of America, Radio and TV News Directors Association, Overseas Press Club of New York, Association for Education in Journalism, Professional Photographers Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Rotary International, the US Navy Public Affairs Alumni Association and the Navy League.

His family plans to honor his request to be buried at sea.Memorial donations can be made to the Denton Friends of the Library, Boonville High School Scholarship Fund, or the charity of your choice.

Royce passed away Nov. 7, 2009 at his home in Gainesville.Royce was born July 3, 1947 to WC and Mary Evelyn Mason in Denton, TX

Royce is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Cynthia and Jim Biggs and Melinda and Lt. Col. Bart Schuck, grandchildren Sean, Chris, Sarah and Kaitlyn.He is also survived by his first wife Jo Fletcher, sisters and brothers-in-law Rochelle and Sandy Beachump, Art and David Shields, brother and sister-in-law Calial (Bud) and Pat Mason, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Sheila Ann Jones, 47 of Forestburg, TX passed away on Monday, November 9, 2009 in Denton. She was born in Justin, TX to Alfred and Loretta (Hensley) Thompson. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends who knew her as just an old tom boy who loved to fish.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday November 11, 2009 from 6-8 pm at Denton Funeral Home. A graveside service will be on Thursday, November 12, 2008 at 2pm at Sweetwater Cemetery. Milton Tledger will officiate.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil Jones; sons, Greg Thompson of Denton, and Matthew Dunham of Lowell, AR; daughter, Amanda Dunham- Green of Rogers, AR; step-daughters, Jessie Rodson of Gainesville, and Sara Jones of Slidell; brothers, Russell Thompson of Denton, and Gary Thompson of Sea Drift, TX; sister, Vickie Dunham of Denton; twelve grandchildren; and numerous other extended family members.

Services are under the direction of Denton Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Nettie M. Corley, 73, of Sanger, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.She was born October 31, 1936 in Denton to C. B. (Mutt) and Mae (Beard) Ausband.She attended Denton Public Schools and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Denton.She was married to Kenneth D. (Ken) Corley on June 20, 1954 in Denton, who passed away on November 21, 2002.She was retired from Sally Beauty Supply.

A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, November 12, 2009 in the Chapel of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home, 705 N. Locust, Denton, with Rev. Cliff Feeler officiating.Burial will follow in the Sanger Cemetery.The family will be at the Funeral Home from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 for visitation.

Nettie is survived by daughters and sons-in-lawKim and Robert Swaim andRhonda and Dannie Cockrell,son Kenneth B. (Bud) Corley, all of Sanger,and grandchildrenKasey and Brandi Cockrell of Canton, MI, Justin and Beth Swaim of Prosper, and Jennifer Cockrell of Arlington, and great-grandson Jett Cockrell of Canton, MI.

She was preceded in death by her sister Nancy Overall and her parents.

Alfred G. Coulter

Alfred G. Coulter, 97 of Green Valley passed away Monday, November 9, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.He was born October 26, 1912 in Robertson Co., TX.He was one of ten children born to Joseph and Mary Emma Bates Coulter.He moved with his family to Denton Co. in 1918, settling in the Stoney Community.He married Gracie Mills on July 19, 1939 in Marietta OK.They were married 70 years.They attended First Baptist Church of Sanger where they had been honored as the couple with the longest marriage.He retired from farming and the Hurricane Fence Co.

Visitation will be Wednesday, November 11, 2009 from 6 – 8 p.m. Funeral service will be Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Sanger with Dr. E.L. McNeil and Rev. Dan Sparkman officiating. Burial will follow at Trinity Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Gracie; daughter, Roselita Pennington of Pilot Point; sons, Harry Coulter of Green Valley and Jerry Coulter of Denton;grandchildren, Natalie Gonzalez, Shelby Coulter, Erin Coulter, and Justin Coulter;great grandchildren, Brent Pennington, Isaiah Gonzalez, Valerie Gonzalez and Gabrielle Coulter;and great - great grandchildren, Cameron and Bailey Pennington.
