Barbara E. Whitlock, 56, of Denton, passed away on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at her home.

She was born April 9, 1953 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.She attended Public Schools and the University of North Texas.She was married to Tom Whitlock in Denton, on November 18, 1985.She was a member of the Baptist Church.

A visitation will be held from 10 am – 4 pm on Tuesday, November 17, at her home 1701 Lakeview Blvd. Denton. A graveside service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, at the Hebron Cemetery near Bells, TX. Mulkey-Mason Jack Schmitz & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Tom Whitlock, daughter, Elene Whitlock, parents Carolyn and Archie Wolfe, all of Denton, sister Marla J. Woods and nephew Eric Woods, of Sanger.

Edith Elaine Crider

Edith Elaine Crider, 94 of Ponder passed away Monday, November 16, 2009 at the Vintage Health Care Center.She was born November 18, 1914 in Ponder to Lyman Gann Thomason and Linnie Lizetta Stallings Thomason.She married Carl Crider on July 5, 1932 in Marietta OK.He preceded her in death on November 1, 2003.She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ponder.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 6 – 8 at DeBerry Funeral Directors.Funeral service will be Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Ponder with Rev. Kim Broadstreet officiating.Burial will follow at Eakins Cemetery.Pallbearers will be Rick Crider, Terry Crider, Mike Crider, Brad Mims, Ron Vaughan and Todd Vaughan.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Crider Vaughan of Ponder; sons, Carl M. Crider, Jr. of Ponder, Fred D. Crider of Liberty TX; sister, Mildred Thomason Crider of Paris; 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Douglas Thomason and great grandson, Montana Vaughan.

 

 

Richard (Dick) William Rodean

Richard (Dick) William Rodean of Denton, Texas, died November 14 at Baylor

Specialty Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He was born in 1940 to Katherine Robbins Rodean and William Alexander Rodean in Chisholm, Minnesota.He married Trudy Oman, also of Chisholm, Minnesota, in 1963 and is survived by Trudy, their daughter Kirsta Brita Rodean and her husband, Casey Springstead of Webster, New York.

After completing his public school education in the Chisholm schools, Dick was accepted into the Eastman School of Music where he earned the Bachelor of Music degree in 1963 and the Master of Music in 1964. He received his Ph.D. in the Division of Fine Arts at Texas Tech University in 1980

Dick began his teaching career as a high school band director in Brighton, New York.He then served as assistant band director at the University of Buffalo for two years before accepting the position of band director at the University of Tampa, where he subsequently became the Chair of the Music Department and Chair of the Fine Arts Department. During that time, he was also principal bassoonist with the Tampa Philharmonic and the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra.

In 1981, he joined Texas Woman’s University as Chair of Music, Dance and Drama.Throughout his tenure, he continued his love for musical performance as a member of the Zephyr Winds chamber ensemble and with the Wichita Falls Symphony. He held the positions of Associate Dean and Interim Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences before retiring in 2005.

Dick was a passionate advocate for bringing the university and community together as evidenced in his strong civic arts involvement.He served as President and board member of the Greater Denton Arts Council from 1982 to 1991 and also as a member of the governing board of the Denton Community Theater, for which he directed numerous musical productions.The Greater Denton Arts Council recognized his achievements with the 2001 Community Arts Recognition Award (CARA). He was a long time member and Paul Harris Fellow with the Denton Rotary International.

It is Dick’s request that in lieu of flowers, donations be madeto a charity of one’schoice or to the Richard Rodean Music Scholarship Fund at Texas Woman’s University, c/o Texas Woman’sUniversity Foundation;P.O. Box 425618;Denton, Texas 76204.

A private graveside ceremony will be held at a later date.

 

 

Mable Lee Fairchild

Mable Lee Fairchild, 93, of Denton passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2009 in Corinth, TX.

She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Wall of Crowell, TX, Jerry Ann Ryan and Fauncine Stubblefield both of Denton, sister Zonell Eddy of Midland, TX. Eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitaiton will be held Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 6-8 pm at Womack-Manard Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 2 pm at First Baptist Church in Crowell, TX.

Services are under the direction of Womack-Manard Funeral Home, Crowell, TX.

 

 

Alice Victoria Burger Driver

Alice Victoria Burger Driver 95 of Killeen passed away November 14, 2009 at the Autumn Oaks Center in Corinth, TX.

She was born November 26, 1913 in Celina, TX to Edward Burger and Mathilda Phillipp Burger. She married Pat Allen Driver on Jan. 7, 1933 in Tishomingo, OK. He preceded her in death on March 27, 1992.

Mrs. Driver was the Chief Accountant for the Commissary Office for the Quartermaster at Ft. Hood, TX. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Denton and enjoyed gardening and traveling.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, November 17th at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Denton. Interment Services will be held on Wednesday, November 18th at 1:30 p.m. at the Killeen City Cemetery in Killeen, TX.

Memorials may be made to the Denton Christian Preschool 1114 W. University Dr., Denton, TX 76201 or to a charity of your choice.

Survivors include daughter Patsy Hutton, son-in-law Rodney Hutton, daughter-in law, Gladys Driver, grandchildren Vicky Driver, John Driver and wife Karla, Duane Driver, Terri Hutton and fiancée Paul Clark, great-grandchildren, David Koch and Patrick Driver and numerous nieces and nephews.

 She was preceded in death by a son, John Driver, sisters, Josephine Zipper, Maggie Tischler, Agnes McKenney, Mary Henzler, Ada Hilz, brothers, Jody Burger, Pat Burger, Louis Burger.

 

 

Richard Lowe Winstead

Richard Lowe Winstead of Lake Forest Village in Denton, Texas, passed away November 09, 2009 at the Presbyterian Hospital in Denton.

He was born April 08, 1926 in Scott County, Mississippi, to the late Claude Walter and Susan Ada Cooper Winstead.

Following his graduation from East Central Junior College in 1944, he joined the United States Marine Corps.He was stationed in the Pacific in World War II, including service on the island of Guam, and served until June 06, 1946.Upon his return from World War II, he graduated from Mississippi College with distinction in 1948.

Richard began his career as a Chemist with The Texas Company (later to become Texaco) in 1948 in Port Arthur, Texas.There he met a school teacher, Anne Katherine Rike (Katie) of Haskell, Texas.They were married July 03, 1955.

In December of 1961, Richard was transferred to Texaco’s Research Center in Beacon, New York.During his tenure in New York he worked with Texaco’s Supply and Distribution Division at Texaco’s Headquarters in New York City.In August of 1979 he transferred back to the Texaco Research Lab in Port Arthur where he worked until his retirement in 1985.

Upon retiring, Richard was elected as an elder at his church, Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Port Arthur, and volunteered at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont.

Richard’s competitiveness and love of games converged when he entered his first bridge tournament in 1991.Duplicate bridge then became his specialty.He won the United States Rookie of the Year (ACBL) title that same year and became a Life Master in 1993.From then on, his mission was to partner with Katie and help her earn her Life Master award.That turned into an 8 year project, accomplished in 2001.

In 2004, Richard and Katie moved to Denton to be near their son John, of Trophy Club, Texas.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Odell and John William; and one sister, Thelma Thornton.His survivors include: his wife of 54 years, Anne Katherine Rike Winstead; his son Stephen and wife Amy of Houston, Texas; his son John and wife Windi of Trophy Club, Texas.He is also survived by seven grandchildren:Andrew and Daniel Winstead, Devon James, Cora, Seth and Jessica Winstead and Dakota James.He is also survived by a sister, Josephine Roberts of Hattiesburg, Mississippi; a brother-in-law, Curtis Thornton of Morton, Mississippi; a sister-in-law, Mildred Winstead of Townsend, Tennessee; and brother-in-law, John S. Rike and wife Mary of Haskell, Texas.

Funeral services were held Thursday, November 12, 2009 in Cole Chapel, First United Methodist Church in Denton.A reception followed in the Flinn Hall Lounge.A burial service followed at Willow Cemetery in Haskell, Texas.

Both services were led by the Rev. Michael James Winstead, Richard’s great-nephew.
