Mary Ann Gambill
“Mary Ann, Mary Ann, siftin’ sand, down by the seaside with Mary Ann.Even little children love Mary Ann, down by the seaside siftin’ sand…”
Mary Ann Gambill, 84 passed away on Monday, December 7, 2009 in Corinth.
Mary spent her life taking care of others. She stayed at home, took care of her husband and raised five children. She did this moving from state to state, often three or four moves in a year. She never complained, she never talked about the things she dreamed of or may have wanted. She spent her time teaching her children to dream and to become what they dreamed. She was self educated. She could discuss any subject brought to her attention. She loved to read and learn, and she passed these passions down to her children.
In her early fifties she went back to school to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Her thirst for knowledge was only one of the reasons for this late in life change. Her husband had become disabled enough to affect his work as an electrician. This gave her a way to help others and to provide income for the family. As an LVN she went to work at Denton State School. There again she was taking care of others, ones that could not take care of themselves.
This is when her daughters learned to cook the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner because Mary always worked the holidays. There were people she cared for that would not have Thanksgiving or Christmas without her. After her retirement from Denton State School, her passion became crocheting. She was known for her blankets, baby outfits, and house slippers. These she made for anyone and everyone in need, again without thought of profit or herself.
One of the heartbreaking things about living a long life is that many of your family and friends are already gone. But they are waiting for her.Our loss is God’s gain.
