Pauline McBride

Pauline McBride, 83, of Denton, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, in Keller. She war born in Denton County on April 2, 1924. She was retired from Camp Cleaners. She married Melvin McBride in August 1941.  He preceded her in death. 

Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Directors.  Funeral service will be Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors with Rev. Buddy Owens officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

She is survived by a son, Stephen McBride of Plano; brothers, John Sparks of Newark and Raymond Sparks of Saginaw; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband and brothers, Bill and Robert Sparks.

Steven Clarkson Poe

Steven Clarkson Poe, 47, of Denton died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, in Denton. He was born June 24, 1960, in Burlington, Iowa to Jack Clarkson Poe and Mary Esther Krumm Poe. He graduated from Wapello High School, and received a B.A. degree from William Penn College, and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He married SunJu  “Sunny” Poe on Feb. 11, 1984, in Lamona, Iowa.

He was a professor of Political Science at UNT. He had served as director of UNT Peace Studies Interdisciplinary Minor and Certificate Program, instructor at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and instructor at the University of Iowa. He received the Student Association Honor Professor Award, Regents Faculty Lecturer, “Top Prof” by the Mortarboard Senior Honor Society, Student Association Honor Professor Award, President’s Council Award for Excellence in Teaching, “Feathered Instructor” by Center for Instructional Services, Metamorphosis Award for mentoring female students at UNT, and Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Professor, all at U.N.T. He served on the Board of Directors of Center for Survivors of Torture, Dallas; and was a member of the Graduate Studies Committee, Library Committee, elected member of Department Executive Committee, chair of Departmental Undergraduate Studies Committee, member of International Studies Advisory Committee, and numerous additional memberships.

He served as Editor in Chief of International Studies Quarterly, was a member of the International Studies Association Governing Council, and Ex Officio member of the International Studies Association Publications Committee.

Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 20, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Directors, 2025 W. University Dr., Denton. A service will be Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors with Rev. John Lindsay officiating. Burial will be in Wapello, Iowa at a later date.

He is survived by his wife, SunJu “Sunny” Poe of Denton; daughters, Mary Poe, Jamie Poe, Megan Poe, all of Denton; parents, Jack and Elizabeth Poe of Wapello, Iowa; sister, Pamela Wagner of Humble, Texas; and brothers, John Poe of Crawfordsville, Iowa, and Richard Poe of Quincy, Ill.
