The Corinth Chainsaw Massacre

08:26 AM CST on Thursday, January 21, 2010

It is not hard to imagine what happened when a small band of Frisbee fanatics got permission to construct a disc golf course in Corinth Community Park.

One of the lads somehow comes up with a chain saw, and after much conferring and rope tugging, somebody gets the machine running and lays it upside a sapling in the park, with astonishing and gratifying results.

“Yo!” exclaims Dude One. “Did you see that?”

“Cool!” exclaims Dude Two. “Lemme see that!”

And the race is on: “Brrrrrap! Brrrrrap!” One fairway cleared. “Brrrrrip! Brrrrrip!” Dogleg to the left. “Brrrrrop! Brrrrrop!” Dogleg to the right.

Before you can say “Who Let the Doglegs Out,” Corinth has its very own Frisbee golf course, complete with those wire baskets on top of little metal poles.

Cool!

The only problem seems to have been that the jolly golfers seem to have been a little overenthusiastic with that chain saw and a little under-supervised by Corinth Parks Department personnel. Frisbee golf enthusiasts ended up beginning play on the course before city officials even knew it was done, and residents near the park complained that the new course encroached on what had been a multiuse trail on the park’s perimeter.

All told, some residents said, the saw-happy golfers had denuded about 9 acres of park land, some of it in the aforementioned trail.

The parks department quickly pulled the plug — and the metal baskets — and took a measure of responsibility for the overzealous course builders. Paul Leslie, the head of the parks department, said the volunteers who planned and built the course had indeed conferred with his department, but that city supervision and volunteer prudence may have been in short supply.

“I’m not going to tell you that we were out there every day or they didn’t take out more trees than they were supposed to,” Leslie told members of the parks board, which finally managed to round up a quorum after a lengthy period of quiescence.

One does not usually associate Frisbee golf with the destruction of a natural habitat. Indeed, Frisbee golfers have always struck us as the most benign and mellow of sportsmen, not given to destruction of any kind. It is a bland pastime even at its most exciting, and a good-hearted and whimsical Web site called Stuff White People Like has this to say about it:

“In this game, you see how many throws it takes to get a disc into a receptacle. There is no other pertinent information about this sport, and its only real value is as a cheap date for white people who like to be outside.”

Alas, the momentary enthusiasm of the saw-wielding volunteers has denied white Corinthians their inexpensive social pleasures, at least for the time being. Board members said that after figuring out how much it would cost to restore the damaged areas in Community Park, they might consider a Frisbee golf course in another location.

Then again, they might opt just to clear off a Hacky Sack pavilion.
