Dad might enjoy trip to airshow

08:25 AM CDT on Friday, June 19, 2009

It’s the kind of photograph that people tend to remember. An American sailor embraces a young woman who is dressed in a white nurse’s uniform.

The shot, taken by famed photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, was made on Aug. 14, 1945, and it captures a moment of jubilation. World War II is finally over, and the celebration is under way in New York’s Times Square.

The photo was published by Life magazine and became one of the best-known images to come out of the turbulent war years. It also resulted in an enduring mystery.

Who were the couple in the photograph?

This Saturday, area residents will have an opportunity to meet a man who claims that he is the sailor making the memorable kiss. Glenn McDuffie of Houston is scheduled to sign autographs at the Denton Airshow.

McDuffie will no doubt be one of the more sedate attractions at this year’s event, which also will feature warbirds, aerobatics and military demonstrations. Performers will include the Trojan Phlyers Aerobatic Team, the U.S. Navy F/A-18C Hornet West Coast Demonstration Team, Mike “Spanky” Galloway in a Pitts S2C, Jason Newburg Viper Airshows, the Texas Twisters Formation Team, the Flight of the Phoenix Escadrille Team and others.

There also should be plenty to see on the ground. Static displays will give attendees up-close looks at several aircraft.

The Denton Air Fair and Airshow formerly was held on Armed Forces Day, but this year’s event was moved closer to Father’s Day, which might just be opportune scheduling for anyone whose dad or granddad has been a pilot. What better gift to give the family patriarch than an opportunity to relive a bit of personal and national history?

Shows like this one promote a lot of family storytelling, and the very lucky at Saturday’s event might just get within earshot of some cherished memories.

The Denton Airport, city of Denton, and the Denton Air Fair Committee have teamed up with David Schultz Airshows LLC to present the show at the Denton Airport, 5000 Airport Road, four miles west of Interstate 35E. Admission is $5, with children younger than 6 admitted free. Gates open at 10 a.m., and the air show will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.

Cameras and lawn chairs are welcome, but no coolers, alcohol or weapons will be allowed. Food and other vendors will be available onsite. For more information, call 940-484-1603 or visit www.denton.schultzairshows.com.

Organizers told us last week that a good crowd is expected. Last year’s show pulled in 10,000, and Saturday’s event should do just as well. Aircraft enthusiasts from several states are expected to make the trip to Denton.

We can’t say that we blame them. The show could provide some interesting entertainment for a Saturday afternoon.

And don’t forget about Glenn McDuffie. Opportunities to investigate such historical moments don’t come along every day.
