Helping hands

Once again the good people of Denton have reached out to others in their time of need. Following last week’s storms, neighbors in a northwest Denton suburb took their chain saws and other heavy-duty equipment to damaged homes and damaged property, cutting down trees, spreading tarpaulins and cleaning up debris.

Kudos also go to the Denton Solid Waste people, who, as usual, went beyond their designated jobs to pick up high stacks of debris from the curbs and even cleared tree limbs and other hazardous materials from streets.

Having lived in Denton more than 40 years, I’m always heartened by the caring atmosphere in this community during times of adversity. Thank you, Denton.

A beautiful performance

Recently we had the thrill of sitting in the UNT Main Auditorium, where past performances of music and dance over the years were called up.

To hear the Denton Bach Society and Orchestra, conducted by Henry Gibbons with Lenora McCroskey on the French organ, will stay with us as one of the most beautiful performances of all.

So, Fort Worth is the “Piano Town”; Denton has been “Music Squared” for a longer time.

With sincere appreciation,

Dr. and Mrs. Richard P. Norgaard,

Supporting perversion

“Hillary believes in perversion,” should have been a banner headline on Page 1, not a little squib on Page 7 of Saturday’s paper [April 5]. Probably no other paper gave it any more coverage, nor did the TV news.

She let it be known that Sodom and Gomorrah were examples of good human behavior in her support of same-sex relationships.

If she will quote chapter and verse of Scripture telling when, where and how God created Adam and Steve as well as Adam and Eve, I will admit she is correct in what she said on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show Monday, March 31.

Little by little, Satan is selling evil as good. It requires the fighting by believers in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to battle the onslaught.

Just as smoking was promoted in the movies as the thing to do, filthy, four-letter words abound now in books, magazines and on TV to the extent that foul language is almost commonplace.

Each of us has to be a part of a movement to restore civility and decency to acceptable-unto-God levels so we get out of the gutter and onto holy ground.

A kick in the shins

Here we go again. DISD is redrawing boundary lines, so it must be time to kick Calhoun Middle School or Denton High School in the shins.

This year it’s DHS.

The battle cry by some parents that DHS is an “inner-city,” poor performing, disorderly school is completely false and for the Denton Record-Chronicle to continue to publish such statements is exasperating.

I bet if you were to compare notes and statistics, all three high schools would have an equal share of problems dealing with teenagers.

All three high schools in Denton have the same TEA rating, academically acceptable. If you buy into their argument, then something terrific must be going on at Denton High School for such a terrible high school to receive the same TEA rating as Guyer.

Good things are happening at DHS. DHS was recently approved as an International Baccalaureate World School. There are only 39 schools in the state of Texas offering that advanced program and DHS is one of them.

DHS was well-represented at the UIL academic competition with first-place wins in math, science, and computer science events. Some of our athletic teams have struggled, but some have performed well, just like all the other high schools.

I am all for school spirit, but when you build yourself up by tearing down your opponent, well, that’s just sad.

Let’s leave alleged perception out of the arguments when discussing boundary lines for attendance zones for the high schools.

Who speaks for God?

* The Rev. Jeremiah Wright speaks hate for whites and hate for America from his pulpit.

* From the pulpit to the FLDS compounds, Warren Jeffs preaches and enables sex between dirty old white men and underage girls.

* From his seat aboard the papal plane, Pope Benedict XVI decries the hundreds of pedophile priests who abuse little boys.

* In closed mosques, Muslim preachers call Americans infidels and demand their death.

* Candidate Obama says he never heard a bad word from his minister of 20 years.

* Presidential hopeful Romney’s religion is denounced from many Sunday pulpits as he is driven from the race.

* The Democratic and Republican parties argue over whom God loves the best.

* Clinton calls “pro-lifers” non-Christian ideologues and suggests a new moralism and liberal socialism.

* Candidate McCain prefers a Christian president.

On and on and. ...

Can one of you good readers help me, please? Where do I go to hear the true word of loving God? From which pulpit do we hear the almighty goodness and grace of God preached?

Don Spaulding,

Hell freezes over

For once I agree with something Roger Horrell wrote [Letters, April 11]. People who can’t seem to say two words without putting “like” or “you know” between them in effect have a self-inflicted speech impediment.

They should either get some speech therapy or go back to middle school and re-learn the basic rules of English.

People who use nouns as verbs or can’t finish a sentence before starting another one are also very annoying.

Denton
