Letters to the editor

09:16 AM CDT on Thursday, May 1, 2008

CORRECTION

A letter to the editor in Wednesday’s Letters column asserted incorrectly that the law firm of Sawko & Burroughs received “more than a million dollars in income” from a contract with the city to collect delinquent and unpaid taxes. City records show that the firm has collected about $327,000 in fees over the length of the contract.

Mulroy and history

It is important for your readers to know about Joe Mulroy’s generosity to the historical side of this community in addition to all the other beneficiaries of his support.

Each and every time the museums and the Historical Park have raised funds for the Courthouse Museum, the Bayless-Selby House Museum and the African American Museum, Joe has been among the first to contribute.

He helped us by donating to the Dr. Edwin Moten fund so that we could buy these artifacts about the first black physician in Denton. He gave to the construction of the museums and is committed to supporting the other facilities that will be placed in the Historical Park.

How anyone can question Joe’s financial support to every charitable cause is beyond my understanding. I can only think that those people aren’t involved and aren’t paying attention.

Georgia Caraway,

Denton, executive director,

Denton County Museums

Support for Burroughs

I am writing in support of Mark Burroughs for mayor. Mark has a long history of serving our community including three terms on the Denton City Council and giving generously of his time and money to local charitable and civic organizations.

He is an enthusiastic and tireless worker with a genuine love for and interest in people and is a good listener. He is passionate about the city of Denton and will be a mayor for all people. He is a dedicated and loving husband and father.

Please join me in voting for Mark Burroughs for mayor.

Evelyn Miller,

Denton

Elect Kamp

Fortunately, the legal questions about this year’s Denton City Council election have been laid to rest. Now, let’s move to the election itself on May 10 (early voting now through May 6).

When the 1979 charter committee recommended term limits, the concern was with the four geographic districts, not with at-large candidates on whom all city voters cast ballots. (I was chairwoman of the committee that advised the City Council at that time.)

I particularly urge your vote for the re-election of Pete Kamp as a member of the Denton City Council. Pete Kamp has been a hard-working, fair, ethical member of the council as well as a small businessperson and enthusiastic participant in charitable and civic concerns.

Her policy emphases embrace open government, transportation and policies that are responsive to local needs and the long-term best interests of the community, including business development and protection of the environment.

Her desire to continue on the council is to see some of those issues through to completion, among them, the new animal shelter and the further greening of the city as well as the completion of pending major developments.

A vote for Kamp is good for Denton.

Why DHA loves us

Top 10 reasons why the Denton Housing Authority loves Heritage Oaks:

10. Don’t have to spend money for upkeep.

9. Have old crone tenants who are easy to intimidate.

8. Have had 30 years to hone their exploiting skills.

7. Have had 30 years to receive moocho, moocho money from the feds to play with.

6. Don’t need qualifications for high-paying jobs.

5. Has afforded DHA employees a very good standard of living on taxpayer money.

4. The cultivation of creative skills in skirting truths.

3. Have freedom to do anything they choose. No oversight or accountability.

2. Feeds the constant need for power trips.

And the No. 1 reason DHA loves Heritage Oaks:

Is a vehicle for contempt and disdain for low-income seniors.

Taxpayers — this is what you pay for.

Denton

Kamp a good choice

Pete Kamp has been an involved citizen and active member of our community for many years. She has years of proven experience and dedication to public service. Her family has a lifelong connection to Denton and is still active in civic affairs.

She is a businesswoman with concerns not only for the business community but also for maintaining and improving the quality of life for all citizens.

Pete has the knowledge, integrity and independence to assist our city to develop policies and provide oversight to our growing and complex city activities. Her past service on the City Council attests to these qualities.

A vote for Pete Kamp will provide a voice on the council that will initiate and continue policies for the benefit of all citizens and for the orderly growth of our thriving city.

Mulroy’s experience

I am writing in support of Joe Mulroy for re-election to the Denton City Council. For three years on the Planning and Zoning Commission and four years on the City Council, Joe comes to each meeting fully prepared and ready to address the issues.

He has demonstrated time and time again his ability to ask the questions that go directly to the core of the matter. His reasoned deliberation leads to practical solutions.

Please vote to re-elect Joe Mulroy to Place 6, Denton City Council.

Barbara Russell,

Denton

For McNeill and Kamp

I am writing in support of Perry McNeill and Pete Kamp, who are running for re-election.

I have lived in Denton for 61 years, and I feel our government has never been in such harmony, or been as progressive.

Our firefighters and police officers are strong for these candidates. Our sports enthusiasts have new ball fields. Our hospitals are increasing. Our drainage projects are being taken care of due to careful planning.

With these two candidates on our council, I know progress will continue. Join me in voting for Perry and Pete.

Marcia M. Merritt,

Denton
