Mark Burroughs for mayor

I knew from the moment that I met Mark Burroughs that he was an exceptional man. He possesses keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity. He has a strong work ethic, is articulate, personable and idealistic. And despite so many blessings, he has a great deal of humility and compassion for others.

Mark is deeply committed to his family and is a wonderfully devoted husband and father.  He also shares this same passion and commitment for his community.

Drawn to public service at a young age, Mark has been a tireless and pragmatic volunteer and advocate for the Denton community for many years. As a former councilman and mayor pro tem, Mark developed very comprehensive approaches to the problems that our city faced.

Leadership depends on having a vision, plans to pursue that vision and an ability to inspire others to work toward that vision.

Mark Burroughs is a leader with a vision for change. He can bring us together as a city so we can confront the urgent challenges we are now facing.

He will listen to people rather than have a predetermined agenda. He will be a mayor who thinks of Denton’s residents as “we” and not “they.” Leadership matters. With Mark’s leadership skills, we will regain our “vision” and make it happen! Together we can make a difference. Please vote for Mark Burroughs for mayor on Saturday, May 10.

Annie Burroughs,

Denton

For Kamp, Mulroy

In this council election we are fortunate to have two extremely well-qualified council members seeking re-election.

Pete Kamp is a tireless advocate for Denton and has worked harder than most to develop the community smartly and steward it wisely. She worked behind the scenes for almost two years to try to craft a winning agreement out of the Fry Street mess.

She cared enough to show up, meet with opposing sides, put in time and energy to try to make Denton the winner.

She approaches most issues with the same level of concern and enthusiasm and brings to the office the experience and intelligence Denton needs.

Joe Mulroy is running for re-election and rarely have we seen a more qualified individual serving on the City Council.

He is a successful businessman with a critical eye for detail, but his real value is in being able to craft compromises between opposing sides, bringing them both to the table and arriving at solutions that are above all, fair.

You can’t expect a councilperson to agree with you 100 percent of the time, but you should expect a councilperson to embrace a fair public process 100 percent of the time.

This is what Joe Mulroy does and why you will find people from across the political spectrum supporting his re-election.

These two council members have served us well and though their opponents may have many sterling qualities, they lack the experience and proven track record of these trusted friends of the community.

Mike Cochran,

Supporting McNeill

Mayor Perry McNeill has served the city of Denton and its residents with sincerity, integrity and dedication.

This seasoned leader’s experience as mayor the past two years and as a City Council member and member of the Planning and Zoning Commission before that, has fully prepared him for the important work yet to be done.

Perry McNeill has the proven professional background, mature judgment and sense of values that are essential to insure that Denton continues to thrive and prosper and that we who live, work, play and raise our families here will continue to enjoy a quality of life second to none.

It takes a special person to dedicate themselves to this level of public service, and I am thankful that Perry McNeill is one of those special people. His energy and tireless service to the city of Denton when coupled with his participation in a host of other community activities is a remarkable demonstration of public service.

I completely trust him to lead our city as mayor and make those critical judgments and decisions entrusted to him in that important position. I encourage all to support this good man and re-elect him to a second term as mayor in the May 2008 municipal election.

Richard Huckaby,

Vote for Joe Mulroy

There have been many letters documenting Joe Mulroy’s financial generosity to many of our nonprofit organizations in Denton. Yes, I have “wheedled” him. Instead of selling us, at cost, the heating system for the little gymnasium at Denton City County Day School, he gave us the equipment and installed it for free.

But the reason I am supporting this man of integrity for another term in Place 6 on the City Council is because of the gift of his time to help our city run more efficiently and effectively.

The City Council makes policy; the city manager and staff are responsible for implementation. Unless you have served in this kind of situation, you cannot imagine how easy it is for the policy makers to not know that procedures being followed aren’t accomplishing the intent of the policy.

Joe has taken a very active role in asking the appropriate questions for information that leads to accountability of who is doing what and why cost overruns have been allowed to occur in several of our departments.

It takes time to learn what questions need to be asked to get the necessary information for good quality control by elected officials. Joe has learned, and is asking management to provide necessary information and is involving residents in finding solutions that will help Denton become the community where each of us can live, learn, work and play.

Joe gets my vote. I hope he gets yours.

Bettye Myers,

Denton

Mulroy and neighborhoods

Those residents concerned about neighborhood issues and preservation need to support Joe Mulroy for re-election to the City Council.

When new development was coming in next to our neighborhood, Mr. Mulroy not only listened and fully understood our predicament; he took immediate action.

He visited with our homeowner group and then arranged several meetings with the builder, the developer and attorneys.

Because of his broad business and land-use background, he established immediately credibility with all parties and was able to quickly identify the solution that was workable for all, the result being that our existing backyards were protected by a 50-foot-wide tree buffer, and the Tuscan Hills community was able to go forward.

Thank you, Joe Mulroy, for a “win-win” outcome.

Re-elect Mulroy

Twenty years ago I moved to Denton just about the time Joe Mulroy was becoming active in city governance. There is no question in my mind that as a result of his service Denton is a better place to live. More important than any particular decision he has made over those years, first as a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission and later as a councilperson, is his commitment to citizen involvement and his willingness to listen with an open mind.

I have not always agreed with him on issues, but I have always known I would get a fair hearing from him. Joe Mulroy deserves another term on City Council, and so does the city of Denton.

Steven Friedson,
