On remaining relevant

Re. Editorial, June 22, “A moral issue that’s bigger than the man”:

I comment not on the substance of the editorial and the opinion expressed regarding how justice might best be served, but upon the editor’s observation that, “Milivoj Asner ceased to be relevant as a human being many years ago.”

Surely, the writer was not suggesting that at some unspecified age all humans cease being “relevant,” which means that they cease “bearing upon or (being) connected with the matter at hand” (i.e., life). Pray tell, at what age would that be? Most assuredly, it must be at some age older than the editor, unless, of course, he considers himself already to have reached that irrelevant age, which I very much doubt.

I cannot judge the relevance of Milivoj Asner at 95 years, not knowing the man, but I can attest to having known a number of people of that age, and older, who were still very much “connected to life.”

What he’s really saying

“Examining Obama,” by Ed Loony [Letters, June 22], implied Obama’s association with the Rev. Wright’s church makes him an unpatriotic, racist America-hater.

Mr. Looney, many Catholics support parish priests knowing they’re child molesters. Parishioners of deposed the Rev. Ted Haggard have not been accused of condoning his sexually immoral conduct. Do these people support child molestation or sexually deviant behavior because of their continuing associations?

Charles Keating’s abuse of his Lincoln Savings and Loan in the ’80s — and the favors he purchased from John McCain — provoked a $2.5 billion taxpayer-financed bailout.  McCain said Keating was a constituent but they were really friends. His family made nine trips at Keating’s expense, three to Keating’s Bahamas retreat. Mr. Loony, are they birds of a feather like you say Obama and Wright are?

By the way, Obama does not want to take your gun — he supported the Second Amendment right to gun ownership as well as the ability of government entities (like D.C.) to ban them. You also said our Constitution, Pledge of Allegiance and sovereignty would go and Americans will be in grave danger!  Mr. Loony, where did you get this?  Did Obama actually say he was going to do away with them?

I have to believe you are afraid because Obama is African-American. As troubling as that is, it is the only rational answer I can come up with to understand your perspective on an Obama presidency.

Examine character

The building at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, D.C., belongs to the citizens of the United States. The lease for tenants of this valuable and prestigious property is signed every four years. Those prospects currently making application for the next four-year lease are: John and Cindy, and Barack and Michelle.

As landlords of this historic residence of the leader of the free world it is incumbent upon each of us that we thoroughly examine the character of all applicants. It’s hard to dispossess the tenants after the lease is signed.

Raymond Fillingim,

Double Oak
