234 years of liberty
Americans “marched to the sound of the guns” 234 years ago to start an unique event in world history — a people who seized Liberty by force, and kept it. The first shots fired in the Revolution were at Lexington on April 19, 1775. Seventy armed Massachusetts militiamen took on 700 British soldiers. That same day, American militia defeated British Regulars at Concord. We celebrate their sacrifices and success on July 4.

We are privileged to be part of that grand experiment. Rights were guaranteed with the blood, the honor and the fortunes of those first patriots. Since then, there have been many challenges, and attempts at subjugation and elimination, that were met with force.
Most of us have not been shot at. We have not suffered wounds of war. But heroes have been called in many wars. And they continue to be called today. Our neighbors spent the last years in Iraq, yet in Texas they could not legally buy beer.
Americans have fought to preserve liberty over 234 years. Generations have stepped up, and many have given their all.
Do we take for granted what those brave men and women fought for, bled for and even died for? Do we have the freedom of attending whatever church we want? Can we criticize our government’s officials, including the president of the United States?
It is only possible if we continue to defend our freedoms. Pray for those whose God-given rights are subjugated by tyrants the world over.
Larry Jambor,
Denton
Fix those roads!
Streets! Although there is a lot of growth going on in Denton, and the city seems to be running short on funds in many areas, monies previously earmarked for street improvements from voter approved bonds, are not and have not been forthcoming!
I have complained to the mayor’s office and public works numerous times, and yet, no noticeable work around town is taking place.
Particularly in the older parts of town. We still live here and pay taxes, so why can’t the work begin? It seems like the people in charge always have an excuse as to why work can’t begin! I’ve lived here for 36 years and believe it’s time to get some things done!

Perry’s veto pen
Gov. Rick Perry vetoed a bill on Friday that would provide free TV recycling to anyone in the state of Texas. This bill passed almost uncontested in the state Legislature last session, and provides a responsible way to discard old TVs rendered obsolete by the digital switch. Why was it vetoed?
I can only assume because Gov. Perry has no alternative solution to this problem, that he doesn’t mind discarding lead and mercury into our environment. Last Friday Gov. Perry placed politics above the public interest, and I hope citizens will remember this ignorant and irresponsible decision. I also hope it influences their vote next November.
Nickolas Diomedes,
Denton
