An insulting editorial

Your editorial of July 9, belittling and insulting a major contributor to, and fundraiser for, UNT’s new football stadium, stopped me in my tracks. It did cause me, however, to dig out the prior newspapers from the recycle bin to re-read the related article, thinking I must have missed something. Unfortunately, I had not.

What were the meaningful points or opinions you were trying to express? Whatever they were, you missed it. Instead, it read very much like a fourth-rate scandal sheet trying to be sarcastically witty, but lacking in the skill, knowledge and intelligence to do so.

For the Goldfields to donate $1.5 million to UNT, having never attended the school, is remarkable. Why mock the good will? Why mock their name? Such an editorial attitude will certainly not encourage other major donors to jump right out there and put their necks on the line.

Is this the attitude that the newspaper really wants to project? I find that hard to believe.

I suggest that the Denton Record-Chronicle Editorial Board and writers consider doing something to make a positive contribution to the community and the universities instead of sarcastically belittling those who do. Why not take the high road more often? It would, most likely, increase your readership.

Stop, drop and roll

If you’ve ever taken fire-safety training you should remember the “stop, drop and roll” technique to putting a fire out, specifically if it is YOU who happens to be on fire, literally.

OK, to get to the point, in today’s work environment, when folks are having trouble making ends meet, wondering if they will lose (if they haven’t already) whatever is left of their 401(k), not to mention their job, things can get pretty heated, attitudes are not always positive, and frankly, communication suffers. People are worried, and with worry comes stress, which can equal a short fuse. People can become fired up.

Even though times are tough and “economics” has become a four-letter word, we should consider the old “stop, drop and roll” method of putting this particular “fire” out:

* Stop — Take a 5-10 minute break from whatever you’re doing. Get some fresh air and clear your head.

* Drop — Get your mind on something else — anything: favorite place, favorite person, etc.

* Roll — Give it time. Let it go; really let it go. Many times, things get better or don’t seem as significant over time.

It’s simply not worth the price once the fire gets to blazing. Remember, there’s not much left after a fire. It’s an all-consuming thing.

Other people’s money

Here goes Obama and that bunch of loony liberals spending a lot more money that isn’t theirs.

It reminds me of someone who suddenly finds, through a bank error, a tremendous windfall of money in their account. They know it’s not theirs, but reason that if they could dispose of it really quickly maybe they wouldn’t get caught.

Have you figured out whose money it really is? Yep, that’s right, it’s ours, or at least will be our debt. Did you tell him he could spend it? He figures if you voted for him you did.

The folks out there in California are just starting to figure out that the billions of tax dollars they have spent wasn’t designed to support millions of extra people who just decided the grass was greener and came on over uninvited.

If California looks scary to you, then just widen your scope a bit and look at what Obama is doing. Kind of looks like California, only super-sized, doesn’t it? By the time he gets through with his utopian plan of equalization, none of us will be able to afford to live here.

Now, I am not wealthy, and I’m scared to death about his new world order. I only hope everyone is watching as closely as I. If I could be granted a wish, I’d ask for equal representation in both the House and Senate. That would at least help keep this socialist dreamer in check.

Sparklers

The 37th annual Kiwanis Fourth of July fireworks display is behind us now, and what a show it was, enjoyed by approximately 25,000 people!

This safe, patriotic day would not have been possible without sponsorships, and we ask residents to extend their thanks to the following: Denton Parks Foundation, Wal-Mart, Budweiser, Denton Record-Chronicle, Mean Green Athletics, Texas Health-Presbyterian Hospital of Denton, Bill Utter Ford, DATCU, First State Bank, North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, Pecan Creek Pediatrics, Premier Pyrotechnics, Texas Woman’s University, Denton Regional Medical Center, Hammerle-Finley, Sawko & Burroughs, Holiday Inn and, of course, the Denton Kiwanis Club, Hank Dickerson, chair.

Thanks also to the UNT and Denton police reserves who donate their services.

Some people might not be aware that this is our largest fundraiser supporting the Denton Kiwanis Children’s Clinic. If you dropped a donation into one of the white buckets, your gift will benefit less-fortunate children in Denton County. The proceeds from our “bucket brigade” provide free medical, dental and prescription services to approximately 600 children whose families could not otherwise afford such care.

Perhaps next year, you would like to be a part of this meaningful event. We would welcome your participation. If you have questions about volunteering, or can help support the Denton Kiwanis Children’s Clinic, call our Kiwanis office at 940-387-6323.

Please don’t forget to thank our sponsors; they are the ones who make this wonderful event possible.

Collette T. Yetka,

president, Denton Kiwanis Club

The Obama two-step

Looks like Congress is going to dance to the Obamanation’s music once again. The government health care bill will be shoved down our throats within about six weeks.

I know of nothing the government has ever run well in history, but they are now running the banks and the automobile industry. It will be abundantly clear in the future that they still can’t run anything.

I think they should legislate themselves into the same health care program they’re cramming down our throats instead of the program they now have. I’ll bet they would write a better bill then!
