Silly ordinances
I think I know why there is a slow response to emergencies in this city [Page 1A, May 1]. It’s because Barney Fife is too busy putting impound notices on vehicles that are stored overnight on residential streets in excess of 20 continuous hours.
You can’t park a well-maintained vehicle in the street or put a basketball goal near one without getting a citation or warning letter from the city. Who makes up some of these ridiculous ordinances?
Some of these silly codes that are made up and enforced are a combination of nonexistent common sense, elitism and the possibility of siphoning more money from its citizens for noncompliance.
I suppose this fall when I put up my Oklahoma Sooner flag outside my house, the city will send me a warning letter to take it down because I’m not supporting the University of North Texas.
Keep up the good work, Barney, because the city of Denton needs you to enforce those strict ordinances.
Gary Hughes,
Denton
Rough treatment
I just want to say what a great job all of the organizers, sponsors, vendors and staff did to produce yet another spectacular Arts & Jazz Festival this year.
The only fly in the ointment so to speak was the brutal, uncalled for, and overtly strenuous response by the city police officers when a few people crossed the lines for the fire path at the Delbert McClinton concert on Saturday night.
One petite woman was pushed to the ground by an officer, and got up visibly shaken. This event sent shock waves through the crowd, and was hopefully caught on tape. Anyone?
Shari Buhan,
