Former Wiley College head coach Johnetta Hayes has joined the UNT women’s basketball team’s staff as an assistant coach, head coach Shanice Stephens confirmed Tuesday.

“She brings a lot of playing and coaching experience,” Stephens said. “She is a young head coach that got thrown in the fire with a lot of responsibility. She has been a tremendous help already.”

The Houston native has been the head coach at Wiley since the 2006-07 season and played at Rice while Stephens was an assistant coach at the school.

“It really helps us that she has some ties to Houston,” Stephens said. “Those will be good inroads for us there.”
