Basketball: Renz has double-double
12:33 AM CST on Sunday, November 16, 2008
Texas Woman’s University senior forward Renee Renz scored 12 points and pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds to lead the Pioneers to a 64-45 season-opening win over the Western State (Colo.) Mountaineers in the second game of the 2008 Pioneer Premiere on Saturday night at Kitty Magee Arena.
Renz was at her best in the opening twenty minutes of the game when she scored 10 points and snared 14 rebounds. Her productive play helped the Pioneers build a 27-17 halftime lead over the Mountaineers despite committing 13 first half turnovers.
“I thought we definitely started a little slow,” said TWU head coach Beth Jillson. “We played like it was our first game of the season. Renee stepped up for us though. She controlled the boards and got a few easy baskets that helped us find our offensive rhythm.”
The Pioneers (1-0) settled down in the second half and pulled away from the feisty Mountaineers (0-1). Freshman guard Jessica Hanna and junior guard Jessica Durr scored nine points apiece after the break to help TWU extend its lead. Hanna finished with a career-high 11 points. Junior guard Keshia Bolds was the other TWU player in double-figures with 10 points.
The two-day, four-team tournament will conclude on Sunday afternoon. Western State will face Cameron University at 2 p.m. before the Pioneers play Truman State at 4 p.m. Cameron defeated Truman State 77-76 in double-overtime thriller in the first game of the night on Saturday.Create A Screen Name
