Men's basketball: UNT basketball to lose one scholarship
08:13 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 6, 2008
The North Texas men’s basketball team will lose one scholarship today when the NCAA releases its Academic Progress Rate report, a source close to the situation said Monday.
The report measures a school’s ability to keep its athletes in school and eligible and also rates each individual program. The formula the NCAA uses to calculate the APR gives each student-athlete a point for remaining eligible and another for remaining in school.
The percentage of the maximum points each team earns determines a program’s score.
If a team earns 92.5 percent of the possible points, its score is 925, the NCAA minimum for a program to avoid scholarship penalties.
The UNT men’s basketball program came up one point short at 924.
The Mean Green would have had four scholarships available for its 2008 recruiting class, but will now have three to give. UNT has already received commitments from three players: Paris Junior College forward Eric Tramiel, Arkansas-Fort Smith point guard Dominique Johnson and Arlington Grace Prep forward Ben Knox.
UNT head coach Johnny Jones said earlier this month that the Mean Green had filled all of its recruiting needs in its latest class.
Calvin Watson and Kendrick Davis, a pair of players who exhausted their edibility at UNT, have already earned their degrees, while Bell Bell, Quincy Williams and Rich Young are set to graduate in the next few weeks.
UNT lost points toward its APR score when players transferred out while they were not eligible, including Roderick Flemings. The former DeSoto standout transferred to UNT from Oklahoma State, but never became eligible to play for the Mean Green and eventually left the school.
Schools are not penalized if players transfer while they are in good academic standing.
UNT’s men’s basketball team finished above the national average in the APR report that was released a year ago when the UNT athletic program fared well as a whole.
All but two of UNT’s programs finished above the 925 benchmark. The football and cross country teams fell short, but were pushed over the mark by adjustments allowed by the NCAA.
