Softball: UNT falls in 1st round of Sun Belt tourney

09:21 AM CDT on Thursday, May 8, 2008

TROY, Ala. — Tanya McLean knocked in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly to give Troy a 4-3 win against the North Texas softball team in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the Troy Softball Complex.

The Mean Green falls to 25-32 overall and 4-1 all-time in the first round of the SBC Tournament. UNT is now 0-4 against Troy this season.

“Kayla threw an outstanding game,” said head coach TJ Hubbard. “She stayed ahead of the batters and pitched out of jams. Defensively, we didn’t execute. I thought we did well offensively. When we had runners on base, we were able to knock them home.”

The Mean Green held leads of 2-0 and 3-2 but was hurt by four errors in the game. Heather Bostic gave North Texas a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh with a single. A misplay on the ball in the outfield allowed the run to score and Bostic to go to third.

Troy tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI triple. After reaching base on an error, Rocky Paige scored the tying run off a triple by Heidi Johnson. McLean won the game on the sacrifice fly, scoring Johnson from third.

Kayla Lawson took the loss for the Mean Green. She gave up just four hits. All four runs were unearned. She falls to 9-9 on the season.

Muller went 2-for-3 in the game and posted the team’s only RBI.

North Texas returns to action today when it faces No. 2 Florida Atlantic at 10 a.m.
