UNT notebook: UNT waiting to see which quarterback ULM will start

Revell might be back this week

08:50 AM CST on Wednesday, November 4, 2009

By Brett Vito / Staff Writer

There is a bit of mystery surrounding North Texas’ game against Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday — at least when it comes to the quarterback the Mean Green will face.

Trey Revell started the first six games of the season for the Warhawks before breaking his thumb in a win over Arkansas State. Cody Wells has started the last two games for ULM, but injured his wrist in a loss to Troy last week.

No one knows who the Warhawks will start except for the team’s players and coaches, and ULM head coach Charlie Weatherbie isn’t giving out any clues as to which way he might be leaning.

“We thought Trey was going to be ready to play last Saturday,” Weather-bie said. “He practiced all last week and will practice all this week. They will both run with the first team. Hopefully we will know by game time. That is when we have to make a decision.”

Revell is one of the top quarterbacks in the Sun Belt Conference. The junior has thrown for 1,124 yards and eight touchdowns and ranks second in the league in passing efficiency with a rating of 137.0.

Wells has not been as efficient, but has still thrown for 622 yards on the season. He threw for 279 yards and three touchdowns last week in a loss to Troy, which is the Sun Belt’s last unbeaten team in conference play at 5-0.

“We really don’t know what will happen,” UNT head coach Todd Dodge said. “We saw against Troy where Cody got hurt and they were thinking about putting Trey in before taking a timeout. They both do a lot of the same things.”

UNT has struggled at times this season against some of the top quarterbacks in the Sun Belt. Troy’s Levi Brown threw for 469 yards in a win over UNT, while Middle Tennessee’s Dwight Dasher threw for 269 yards and added another 75 rushing yards in a win over the Mean Green.

UNT showed some signs of improvement defensively in the second half of a win over Western Kentucky last week, holding the Hilltoppers scoreless in the fourth quarter of a 68-49 win.

UNT knows it will have to build on that performance to have a chance to win consecutive games for the first time since the 2004 season, no matter who plays quarterback for the Warhawks.

“Trey can make any throw you want and Cody Wells has done a nice job for them also,” Dodge said. “They get the ball to a lot of different people.”

Cole makes debut at practice after transfer

Former Oklahoma State wide receiver William Cole made his debut at practice Tuesday.

The former Cedar Hill quarterback transferred to UNT late this summer and has spent the fall working in the team’s strength and conditioning program while recovering from a knee injury he suffered while playing for the Cowboys.

Cole is expected to play wide receiver for UNT.

“He was able to get out, run around and start to learn our offense,” Dodge said.

Mosley questionable for Saturday’s game

Backup running back Micah Mosley is questionable for UNT’s game against ULM after suffering a concussion in the Mean Green’s win over WKU.

“He made a big hit on special teams and knocked himself out,” Dodge said. “We are being very careful with him.”

Mosley did not practice on Tuesday.

Soccer

UNT to play in SBC tournament today

UNT will face Middle Tennessee at noon in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament today at FAU Soccer Stadium on the campus of Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla.

UNT is the No. 4 seed in the eight-team event.

The Mean Green (11-6-2) enters the tournament riding a three-game winless streak dating back to a 2-0 win over Arkansas State on Oct. 18.

UNT hasn’t scored a goal since then, while dropping a 2-0 game to Western Kentucky and a 1-0 game to rival Denver. The Mean Green also battled to a scoreless tie with MTSU (12-5-2) during its slide.

UNT played without its leading scorer Michelle Young and goalkeeper Mandy Hall in its season finale against Denver due to a concussion and a thumb injury, respectively.

Freshman Haley Newsome filled in for Hall in the Mean Green’s loss to Denver and finished with six saves.

The Mean Green has struggled offensively throughout the season and enters the tournament ranked seventh in the Sun Belt with 25 goals. Young has eight goals on the season, but no other UNT player has more than four.

UNT players named to All-Sun Belt team

Senior midfielder Kendall Juett and senior defender Kelli Lunsford were both named to the All-Sun Belt first team on Tuesday night.

Juett has four goals and six assists on the season, while Lunsford has anchored the Mean Green’s defense. Freshman forward Michelle Young was a second-team pick after scoring eight goals on the year.

Volleyball

UNT controls its destiny heading into key matches

UNT will host three matches beginning Friday that will offer the Mean Green the opportunity to wrap up a spot in the Sun Belt Conference tournament later this month.

UNT will face Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, New Orleans on Saturday and Louisiana-Lafayette on Monday. The Mean Green has five matches left in the regular season and will likely need two wins to advance to the eight-team postseason tournament.

“If we take care of business this weekend, there will be less pressure on us,” UNT head coach Cassie Headrick said. “The big match will be against UNO. The last time we played them was at the end of a brutal road trip. We played well at the end of the match and hope that carries over. If we play like the way we have been, we should be able to get these matches.”

UNT will head into its weekend series having won three of its last five matches, with its only two losses coming in matches that lasted five sets. The Mean Green was in position to pull out its match against Arkansas State after taking an 8-5 lead in the fifth set only to stumble down the stretch and drop the final set 16-14.

UNT won its first match of the weekend in four sets over Arkansas-Little Rock.

“It was a tough way to end the match on Sunday, but we played really well on Friday night,” Headrick said. “We had one of our smoothest matches and hit the highest percentage we have all year long. We are still on the upswing. That’s a good sign.”

Huddleston climbing UNT career kill list

Amy Huddleston is quickly climbing the UNT career kills chart.

The junior outside hitter finished with 23 kills in UNT’s loss to ASU and ranks 10th in school history with 818 kills. She has 350 kills on the season, which is 53 kills shy of the single-season top 10 list.

Carly Collins, who played at UNT from 1993-96, is ninth on the career kills list with 845.

Tennis

UNT to wrap up fall season with home tournament

The UNT tennis team will wrap up its fall season this weekend when it hosts the North Texas Classic, a four-team event at the Waranch Tennis Pavilion.

UT-Arlington, Lamar and Northwestern State will participate in the event that will begin Friday and conclude Saturday. Matches will begin at 9:30 a.m.

“These are not the big names in college tennis, but that is deceiving,” UNT head coach Sujay Lama said. “All of these teams have good kids. A lot of them have quality foreign players. This will give us an idea of where we want to put our players in our lineup and give us a preview of the spring season.”

UNT has played a tough fall schedule, one highlighted by a breakthrough win by the Mean Green’s top doubles team of Madura Ranganathan and Irina Paraschiv. The pair knocked off Baylor’s top doubles team of Csilla Borsanyi and Lenka Broosova 9-7 at the Wilson/ITA Texas Regional.

Both Borsanyi and Broosova were All-America selections last season after reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament and were ranked No. 8 nationally and No. 1 in the Texas region before the match.

“Our kids realize that we are not too far away from breaking through against the top teams in the country,” Lama said. “To do what we did against Baylor makes the other players believe that they can do it, too.”

Both Ranganathan and Paraschiv were also invited to the ITA Riviera All-American event in Los Angeles this fall.

“It has been challenging,” Lama said of the fall season. “I was hoping for more wins, but we are playing premier players from premier teams in the country. We have improved, especially from the mental side.”

UNT is providing free food for fans who attend the Mean Green’s match on Saturday afternoon.

Swimming

UNT to return to action this week in two meets

UNT will resume its fall schedule this week in meets at SMU and Austin College.

The Mean Green will take its top swimmers to Dallas, while some of its younger athletes will swim at Austin College, a Division III school in Sherman.

“Both places have a six-lane pool,” UNT head coach Joe Dykstra said. “We decided it would be better to split the team. I am excited to see our second-tier swimmers step up and be the show on Saturday.”

UNT comes into the meet after taking a week off following a trip to Denver, where the Mean Green lost meets to the Pioneers and Utah.

“We struggled when we were in Denver with fatigue,” Dykstra said. “We were beating Denver and Utah the first half of the meet until the longer races. The altitude was tough.”

Dykstra said all of his swimmers were healthy and had recovered from a variety of minor aches and pains.

Dykstra said he has been particularly pleased with the performance of his sophomore class and freshman Catia Weickgenant.

UNT diving coach to face wife in meet

UNT diving coach Jim Pyrch will face an unusual set of circumstances when the Mean Green takes on Austin College this week.

Pyrch’s wife, Krissa, is the Kangaroos’ diving coach.

Jim Pyrch spent most of his coaching career at Yale and was the national diving coach of the year in 1987 and 1993.He is in his second season at UNT.

Austin College contacted Dykstra to see if he knew of a qualified candidate when it was looking for a diving coach. Dykstra suggested Krissa Pyrch.
