Football: WR Stickler posts big numbers
12:16 AM CDT on Sunday, October 19, 2008
MONROE, La. -- Brock Stickler surpassed his season totals in a single game in North Texas’ loss to Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday night.
The 10 passes and the 129 receiving yards Sticker posted didn’t matter much to the senior on a night when the Mean Green fell to the Warhawks 35-23 and once again failed to pick up its first win of the season.
UNT has lost its first seven games of the season and is on an eight-game slide dating to last season, tied with Washington for the longest losing streak in the country.
Breaking that skid is what matters most to Stickler, who is seeing his time with the Mean Green run short.
“It doesn’t matter to me,” Stickler said. “My individual stats don’t mean a thing if we don’t win. I was getting chances tonight.”
Stickler’s previous high was nine catches for 98 yards against Louisiana-Lafayette during the 2007 season.
He had just seven catches for 78 yards on the season coming into the night and had missed two games earlier this season due to an injury. His previous high this season was five catches for 45 yards in a loss to Florida International two weeks ago.
“I was really pleased with Brock,” UNT head coach Todd Dodge said. “I am real proud of him. He had a different look in his eyes coming into fall practice and then had to go through some injuries. He has come back and performed the way he is capable of.”
Dunbar out for season with knee injury
Running back Lance Dunbar missed UNT’s game against ULM with a season-ending knee injury he suffered in a loss to Louisiana-Lafayette last week.
Dunbar finished with 15 yards on four carries against ULL, but was knocked out of the game in the first half. The injury prevented the freshman from building on an impressive debut season.
Dunbar has 178 rushing yards on the season and is averaging 4.6 yards a carry. He entered Saturday’s game as the Mean Green’s second-leading rusher.
UNT was forced to play without two of its top offensive players in Dunbar and wide receiver/quarterback Riley Dodge against ULM. Dodge was knocked out of the Mean Green’s loss to Rice with a concussion on Sept. 27 and will apply for a medical redshirt after playing in just three games in his freshman season.
ULM holds on fourth down early
ULM jumped out to an early lead against UNT, thanks in large part to a critical stop on fourth down in the first quarter.
The Mean Green was down 7-0 but had driven to the ULM 31-yard line, where it faced a fourth-and-1 situation. UNT elected to go for the first down, but failed to convert when running back Cam Montgomery was cut down for no gain.
The Warhawks scored on the ensuing play when quarterback Kinsmon Lancaster hit wide receiver Luther Ambrose for a 69-yard touchdown.
Montgomery loses fumble again
UNT running back Cam Montgomery committed a costly fumble that helped lead to a touchdown for a second straight week.
The junior running back picked up 8 yards on a run through the heart of the Warhawks’ defense in the second quarter before fumbling. ULM recovered the ball at the 43-yard line and converted on the Mean Green’s mistake three plays later when wide receiver Darrell McNeal threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to J.J. McCoy.
Montgomery fumbled in another key spot in a loss to Louisiana-Lafayette on Oct. 11, after an 8-yard run that would have given the Mean Green the ball at the Ragin’ Cajuns’ 16-yard line.
