Barry Vermillion / Golf notes

Local tourney no more

08:49 AM CST on Thursday, January 31, 2008

Barry Vermillion

For several years I have always said my favorite golf tournament, The Medal of Honor Host City Program annual tournament played at the Gainesville Municipal Golf Course, signaled the beginning of the spring golf season for me. Times change, as they say.

The tournament had been a source of funding for the annual variety of events for the special week and was an opportunity for golfers to meet, and sometimes play golf with, a few of the Medal of Honor recipients.

Sources associated with the program have told me that each year the number of golfers has declined along with dwindling sponsor support has made the event non-productive as a funding source. My disappointment that the event will no longer be held is shared by other local golfers.

Wildhorse hole in one

The Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch reports Joyce Marshall witnessed Cyndi Stampf of Denton score a hole-in-one on Jan. 15 with a 6-iron on the 107-yard par-3 Mustang no. 5.

Winners of the 2-player team scramble are: Champions Flight, gross score — 1. Jim Wohlgemuth and Billy Franklin, 60; 2. Randy Brittain and Tony Davis, 65. Net score — 1.
