Barry Vermillion / Golf Notes

Hole-in-ones have been plentiful

There must be something in the air over our area other than golf balls, UFOs, and allergens lately causing a rash of several hole-in-ones at area golf courses.

Adam Roby scored his ace on Jan. 20 on Lantana’s 80-yard par-3 no. 11 with a 7-iron. Watch out, Tiger, Adam is only 10 years old. The shot was witnessed by Aaron Roby and Mark Roby.

Aaron Harris fired his hole-in-one on Feb. 2 on Lantana’s 146-yard par-3 no. 8 with an 8-iron. Tyrone Rashid witnessed the shot.

Angie Barnett witnessed Judy Smith’s perfect 6-iron shot on Feb. 4 from 87 yards on Lantana’s no. 11.

No less impressive and amazing to me is the double eagle on Feb. 9 by Dave Cagianello on Lantana’s 553-yard par-5 no. 7.

Just across the Red River at WinStar Golf Course on Feb. 10 Bill Chamblee of Denton aced the 140-yard par-3 no. 5 with a 7-iron as witnessed by Mike Laderer and Jeff Richard.

What are the odds?

Odds of hitting a hole-in-one are estimated to be one in 20,000-33,000 depending on who you ask. The odds are based on an estimation of rounds played and holes-in-one scored nationwide.

“No single organization was dedicated to historically registering hole-in-ones,” said James Bowen, president of the United States Golf Register. “We think an ace is a historical event and we want to treat it like one.”

The trademarked U.S. Golf Register was formed in 1998 as a historical registry. Each hole-in-one submitted is given an official registration number and is recorded along with the golfer’s name, date, course, hole, ball and club used, and at least one witness. The information is then permanently archived and also posted on the Register Web site.

To submit your hole-in-one you can ask for a registration form at your golf course, or call U.S. Golf Register headquarters at 318-222-9686 located at 712 Milam St., Ste. 100, Shreveport, LA 71101. Submissions are also accepted by logging on to the Register Web site at www.usgolfregister.org .
