Barry Vermillion / Golf Notes
Denton golf tourney still on schedule08:39 AM CDT on Thursday, September 11, 2008
It appears now that all outdoor activities from Friday through Sunday will be at the mercy, directional whim and strength of Hurricane Ike as he roars into the Gulf and heads our way.
According to the City of Denton Athletics Manager, Heather Gray, who is coordinating the annual Denton City Golf Championship that is scheduled to be a two-day 36-hole individual stroke play tournament, at the time I am writing this, all activities will continue as scheduled.
Round one will be played on Saturday, Sept. 13 and round two on Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Robson Ranch Wildhorse Golf Club in Denton.
Tee times begin at 10 a.m. each day. Mandatory check-in will be 45 minutes before the assigned tee times. Players should call 940-246-1001 from 12–6 p.m. on Friday, September 12 to confirm assigned tee times.
The tournament will be organized in four flights: Men’s Championship, Men’s A, Senior Championship, and Women’s Championship.
A $100 American Express gift card will be awarded to the male and female champions. Additional awards will be given to the top three players in each division and includes gift certificates to play golf at Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch and golf balls.
In the event that Ike causes severe weather conditions preventing a two day event then a complete round played and completed on Saturday or Sunday will determine the winners. If a complete round cannot be played, the tournament will be rescheduled with a probable weekend date sometime in October.
For more information and possible changes in the tournament schedule call City of Denton Athletics Manager Heather Gray at the Civic Center at 940-349-7218.
Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 920
annual tournament
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 920 in Denton will host their fourth annual golf tournament with an 8 a.m. tee time Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Northern Challenge Golf Club in Sherman.
The format is a four-person team scramble.
Entry fee is $360 per team and includes cart and green fee, door prizes, a longest drive, closest to the pin, hole in one, a 60 foot putting contest, and a barbeque lunch after completion of play. The top three low scoring teams will be awarded prize money.
The tournament is the major fund raising event each year with proceeds supporting the chapter’s honor guard, rifle team, color guard, vintage military vehicle maintenance and many other projects benefiting past and present veterans.
To register for the tournament and for more information about VVA Chapter 920, call Jerry Alexander, Tournament Coordinator, at 940-765-2394, or the chapter phone number at 940-387-9920.
