Cross Country: Argyle boys win cross country title
11:07 AM CST on Sunday, November 11, 2007
ROUND ROCK — Argyle senior Blake Woolums led the Eagles to the Class 3A boys state cross country title on Saturday by winning an individual gold medal in a dominating performance.
Woolums crossed the finish line in 16:09.70, almost 23 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Michael Morris of Wills Point.
As a team, Argyle crushed the rest of the field, including second-place LaVernia and District 8-3A rival Decatur, which finished third.
Two other Argyle runners, Stephen Curry and Thomas Dagg, also cracked the individual top 10. Curry finished fifth in 16:42.50, while Dagg was sixth in 16:48.85.
Argyle coach Kathi Olson said her team, which had never competed at state before, didn’t let the pressure of the meet affect its performance.
“They were pretty calm. They were loose and focused on what they needed to do,” Olson said. “Blake has only lost one race this year. He’s been running really well. It worked out for the best for him.”
On the girls side, Argyle senior Kristie Krueger fell just short of the state title. She led for almost the entire race before being passed in the final few feet by Bailey Belvis of Prosper. So Krueger, who was battling a torn quadriceps muscle and shin splints, settled for a silver medal with a time of 11:32.60.
She did improve on her sixth place finish from last year, however.
“She was pushing as hard as she could, but Bailey just caught her,” Olson said. “She’s disappointed, but she wants to take that anger and use it during track season.”
Colbea Harris also posted a strong fifth-place showing for Argyle in 11:49.15, although her time was seven seconds slower than her eighth-place finish a year ago.
“Everybody’s coming home with a medal, so you can’t be too disappointed,” Olson said.
In Class 2A, the Krum boys finished eighth in the team standings. Wallis Brazos won the team title.
