Boys basketball: Cubs oust Argyle at regionals
Eagles eliminated by Brownfield again12:34 AM CST on Saturday, March 1, 2008
LUBBOCK -- Last season, Brownfield ended Argyle’s season earlier than it would have liked.
After a 68-63 loss to the Cubs for the second straight year in the Class 3A Region I semifinals, the Eagles went sent home again on Friday.
“I thought our kids played hard,” Argyle coach John King said. “We felt like there were … things we needed to do to be successful tonight and to control the tempo, which I thought we did a fairly good job of doing.”
Argyle last breath came when the Eagles were down 60-52 with 3:03 left in the game. With just over two minutes left, Argyle’s Josh Drake had a basket that pulled the Eagles to within six points.
Billy Bruce Carroll, who led Argyle with 19 points, scored with 1:37 left to cut the Argyle deficit to four. Argyle had a chance to steal the game away from a Brownfield team that had been ahead for most of the game.
However, the Eagles were forced to send the Cubs (27-6) to the free-throw line and the Cubs put the game away.
The Eagles (34-4) were able to stay in the game against Brownfield despite Cory Dixon’s foul trouble early. The foul trouble prevented Dixon from making a contribution for most of the game. He finished the game with four points, but had three fouls by the end of the first half. Dixon had one foul in the second half, enabling him to play more in the late minutes of the game.
“Certainly Cory getting in foul trouble early hurts our team,” King said. “He got two quick ones in the first quarter. That hurt us for a couple reasons: No. 1, we don’t have his presence down low scoring. It did play a huge factor but I thought our other kids came in and did a nice job.”
The Cubs had three players score in double figures. Chris Davis and Hudson had 16 points each along with Jonathan Lawrence’s 15. Davis scored all his points in the second half.
At the beginning of the second quarter, Argyle had its first and only lead of the game. Brownfield had back-to-back turnovers, enabling Argyle to gain a 17-15 lead. Brownfield soon responded with an 11-4 run.
Carroll took an injury to the right ankle at the 3:06 mark in the fourth quarter. The Argyle trainers stretched him, and he soon was able to walk off under his own power, and despite the injury, continued to play in the game.
With Argyle losing seven seniors, King said his team would do its best to reload for next year.
“I can’t say enough about our seniors,” he said. “They showed our juniors. They showed our sophomores. They showed our freshmen how to compete on a very high level and what it takes throughout the year to be able to compete on a very high level. They showed them what they had to do in the summer, in the fall and certainly during the season."
