Football: Blackmon makes big plays for Falcons
Senior reciever has 13 touchdowns this season09:06 AM CST on Thursday, November 15, 2007
CORINTH — The Lake Dallas roster lists Alvin Blackmon as a wide receiver, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.
It’s true that Blackmon’s primary responsibility is catching passes, whether it’s long bombs, screens or anything in between. But the Falcons also use their versatile senior as an option in the rushing game, on kick returns, as a downfield blocker, and even line him up at quarterback in certain formations.
Blackmon’s speed (he runs the 40-yard dash in less than 4.5 seconds — by far the fastest of anyone on the team) and big-play ability attracted the attention of Purdue, where Blackmon is orally committed to play next season.
But his coaches and teammates have seen Blackmon steadily develop into one of the top receivers in the area since he burst on the scene with two touchdowns in the first quarter of his first varsity game in 2005.
“He’s the guy that makes the big plays for us,” said Lake Dallas head coach Michael Young. “We try to find some different ways to be able to get him the ball. The more we can get him the ball, the better off we’re gonna be.”
Blackmon (6-1, 185) has accounted for 13 touchdowns this season, including 10 on pass receptions. He has caught 47 passes for 872 yards overall, ranking him among the top 10 Class 4A receivers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Although the touchdown total is impressive, it’s the clutch scores that have made Blackmon stand out for the Lake Dallas faithful.
Last season, for example, Blackmon scored the game-winning touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the final two regular-season games against McKinney and Frisco. Those victories led directly to the Falcons winning their first district title.
This season has seen a repeat performance for both Blackmon and Lake Dallas. He has scored at least one touchdown in nine straight games entering Friday’s bi-district matchup against West Mesquite.
In the regular-season finale against Frisco last Friday, Blackmon caught touchdown passes of 21 and 47 yards in the first half as the Falcons rolled, 42-14, and again clinched the 9-4A crown.
“Our kids kind of respond to him,” Young said. “When he makes a big play, he kind of excites everybody. He kind of sets the tone with his play.”
Blackmon said that after a successful 2006 season, he spent the summer working on his speed and strength in anticipation of an increased offensive role during his senior season.
“I just worked hard to get ready,” said the soft-spoken Blackmon. “I feel like I just need to step up.”
Blackmon has excelled this season in a new-look offense for Lake Dallas. The Falcons lost their two top rushers from last year, Justin Hill and Chase Baine, to graduation. That allowed Blackmon to reunite with Zach Waggoner, who has been his teammate on and off since their peewee days.
“We’ve always kind of had chemistry,” Waggoner said. “I knew Alvin was a huge playmaker. We talk a lot about how the defense is aligned and where I’m going to put the ball.”
Waggoner said he sees Blackmon as a leader by example on the Lake Dallas offense, an unselfish player who will block for his teammates when needed, and isn’t afraid to get the ball in clutch situations.
“It makes me feel real comfortable when I throw the ball,” Waggoner said.
Young figures the Lake Dallas offense generally has thrown the ball about 10 times more per game this season than last, which suits Waggoner and Blackmon. Young has been impressed with his quarterback’s poise and ability to throw the deep ball.
“We knew physically he could do it,” Young said of Waggoner, who has completed 93-of-133 passes this season with 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions. “He’s done a great job managing the game and keeping his composure. He’s really shown us he can be a leader.”
The Falcons broke out of an offensive slump against Frisco, racking up more points in the first half (28) than they had in any of their previous three games total. The catalyst, as usual, was Blackmon.
And although he prefers not to talk about himself, the senior relishes the spotlight that opponents put on him each game.
“I try not to get big-headed,” Blackmon said. “It makes me want to play harder and make more plays.”
