Football: Boyd picks up first-ever win over Denton

11:55 PM CDT on Thursday, September 13, 2007

By Tyler Floyd / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

McKINNEY— Based on last year’s result, Thursday night's game at McKinney’s Ron Poe Stadium should have been a cakewalk for the Denton Broncos.

It was any but that.

Denton was outplayed in every facet of the game in a disappointing 31-6 loss to McKinney Boyd, which picked up its first varsity win in program history.

“We just didn’t play real well. It’s pretty simple,” Denton head coach Randy Patzkowski said. “I was a little bit worried with the way we handled this game last year and with the week of preparation. We learned a lesson. We have to show up and play every week. If we learned anything from tonight it’s that it doesn’t matter who the opponent is. … It doesn’t matter what the score was last year. We gotta show up and play.”

After dominating Boyd a year ago, Denton only managed 162 total yards offensively, 151 of which came through the air.

Seven Denton backs attempted to run on the Boyd defense, but the much-improved defensive unit refused to allow it. Denton averaged less than a half of a yard per carry, which wasn’t helped by the six sacks that Boyd picked up.

“You gotta give them credit. I was really impressed with the job they did,” Patzkowski said. “They whipped us and they whipped us good. We’ll go back to the drawing board and get ready for next week.”

With so many key players seeing snaps on both sides of the ball for Denton, it’s tough to get behind early, but that’s where Denton found itself in the first half.

Boyd had Denton pinned deep in its own territory before a tipped pass on a wide receiver screen created an interception for linebacker Miller Burns, who took the ball 12 yards for the first Boyd touchdown.

Two possessions later a muffed punt set the stage for a 30-yard field goal for Boyd and Denton’s inability to contain Boyd quarterback Daryn Alves allowed an 81-yard touchdown dash to put Denton down 17-0 at the half.

“It helps to start the game out fast and to build on that confidence and that momentum as opposed to something bad happening,” Patzkowski said of his team’s early misfortune. “We kept shooting ourselves in the foot in the first half.”

Despite the poor game in the rush attack, Denton found some bright spots in the passing game.

Wide receiver Adrian Irvin had six grabs for 106 yards and seemed to be an unstoppable target for quarterback Spencer Stewart, who finished 14-of-29 passing with two interceptions.

Stewart’s counterpart, Alves, proved to be too much for Denton to handle most of the night as he ran for 158 yards on 18 carries with touchdown runs of 81 and 55 yards.

“We knew he [Alves] was gonna be elusive and make some big plays, and he did,” Patzkowski said.

On the other hand, the Denton passing defense was able to hold Alves to only 47 yards passing and limit Jeff Fuller, who recently committed to Oklahoma, to only one catch for 9 yards.

Thursday marked Boyd’s first varsity win in the program’s second year, which didn’t make the loss any easier for Denton to swallow, but Patzkowski knows Boyd was a formidable opponent.

“They deserved it,” Patzkowski said. “I’m just disappointed that it came at our expense.”

Denton looks to break out of its two-game slump when it takes on Cowley at home.
