Basketball: Eagles roll past Prosper in 9-3A showdown

09:47 AM CST on Friday, January 30, 2009

By Matthew Muench / Staff Writer

ARGYLE — Before Thursday night’s Argyle-Prosper boys basketball game, the public address announcer pitted the matchup as “the battle of first-place teams in District 9-3A.

It didn’t look much like a battle.

“In this district it is Argyle and the seven dwarfs,” said Prosper head coach Greg Nix. “It really is. They are unbelievable. You really don’t know how good they are until you see them up close.”

It was clear from the get-go that Argyle is in a different class than its district foes as it used a big first half to stomp Prosper 88-47.

The win puts Argyle (23-2, 4-0) all by itself in first place, and it appears the Eagles will stay there and coast into the playoffs.

Argyle head coach John King smiled when he heard Nix’s Walt Disney reference.

“I’ll take that as a compliment,” he said. “We know when we play we have a target on our backs and we are going to get everyone’s ‘A’ game. As a result, we feel like we have to bring our ‘A’ game.”

Argyle guard Caden Dickerson had no trouble bringing his best skills to the hardwood on Thursday. He nearly posted a triple-double after three quarters of play.

The Western Kentucky signee scored 27 points, tallied nine assists and grabbed six rebounds to lead a powerful offensive attack.

“He is a complete player,” Nix said. “He is one of the best players I have seen in a while, and Argyle is one of the best teams I have seen in two or three years.”

Dickerson wasn’t the only player on the highlight reel. Eight other Eagles found the box score and four others hit double figures, including Carson York, who chipped in with 12 points.

“It is always nice when you have multiple players score,” King said. “It makes it so you can’t take one of our players out the game. If you take one out, we will find someone else to contribute.”

Argyle was too fast and near perfect during the first 16 minutes. It posted 54 first-half points and missed only seven shots from the field.

Argyle began to pull away in the second quarter when its defensive was full of pressure and its offense couldn’t miss. The combination helped Argyle go on a 16-1 run to take a 26-point lead into halftime.

“In the first half offensively we played about as good as we have all season,” King said. “We shot the ball well and passed the ball well. We wanted to set the tone early. We really got our offense going.”

The Eagles scored at will with three-point shots, dunks, mid-range jump shots and transition layups.

“They shoot the ball unbelievably well,” Nix said. “They pretty much beat us in every area tonight.”

Argyle continued its perfect run through District 9-3A after topping last-place Prosper.

Argyle (11-13, 6-0) used two big first half runs — a 10-0 surge in the first period and a 14-0 burst in the second period — to pull away and coast to its sixth consecutive district victory.

The first run was thanks to the hot hand of Colbea Harris, who scored seven consecutive points to help Argyle build a 14-4 lead.

The second surge was thanks to the long distance shooting of Amy Beecher. The senior sharpshooter nailed three 3-pointers during the big run. She scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the second quarter to help Argyle take a 31-11 lead into the half.

“It took us a while to break their zone,” said Argyle head coach Steve Schmidt. “But once we got moving and we found some space, we started to roll. We found Amy and she was fortunate to knock some shots down.”

Prosper (6-12, 0-5) struggled against Argyle’s full-court pressure in the first half. It had trouble getting shots off and holding on to the ball. During the first half, Prosper hit just three field goals and had 11 turnovers.

Ashleigh Monk led Prosper with 11 points. Claire Pettibon chipped in 15 points for Argyle and Harris added nine.
