Volleyball roundup: Guyer keeps rolling with sweeps of Little Elm, Joshua

Ryan, Denton record victories

08:31 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Guyer swept a pair of matches on Tuesday, defeating Little Elm 25-11, 25-8, 25-14; and Joshua, which won the Graham tournament last weekend, 25-11, 25-13, 25-20.

Erin Garvey had 20 kills and four blocks on the night to lead the Lady Wildcats (15-3). Alyssa Hanley added 19 kills, eight aces and two blocks. Other standouts included Kaylee Fifer (41 assists, seven kills, four blocks) and Hannah Ingram (11 aces, four kills).

“This is the best I’ve seen them play so far,” said Guyer head coach Jennifer Bramlett. “Their intensity against Joshua was ideal.”

The Lady Wildcats will host the 16-team Guyer Volleybrawl tournament beginning Thursday. Guyer plays Fort Worth Eastern Hills at 3 p.m. Thursday. It will open district play on Tuesday.

“I think the girls are really ready to get started,” Bramlett said. “They’re excited, and they have some big goals.”

Ryan d. McKinney

Ryan showed improvement in almost every area in dominating McKinney during a three-game sweep, 25-22, 25-13, 25-20.

“We executed a lot better than we have been, and defensively we played a lot better tonight,” said Lady Raiders head coach Cindy Williams. “We communicated better and our blocking was better. We had a little more focus and we’re hitting the ball harder. We really played with our head up, and a lot of good things happened for us.”

Keidra Williams paced Ryan with 10 kills and 10 blocks. Sarah Telaneus added 10 kills and five digs, with Kate Harrison contributing 18 assists and six digs. Other standouts for the Lady Raiders included Jenna Brown (six digs), Maddy Taylor (10 assists, two aces) and Kayla Bond (four blocks).

Ryan (9-3) returns to action at 10 a.m. Friday when it opens the Arlington Sam Houston tournament against Mansfield Summit.

Prosper d. Lake Dallas

CORINTH — Lake Dallas started slow and couldn’t finish off a late rally against Prosper before falling in five games, 25-14, 25-22, 11-25, 15-25, 15-13.

Sluggish starts have become a habit for the Lady Falcons (6-5), something head coach Mary Ketcher said will become a focus in practice.

“We started out really slow,” Ketcher said. “They stepped it up the third and fourth game, but we just couldn’t pull it off at the end. It was a good character-building experience.”

Standouts for Lake Dallas included middle blocker Carly LeMay and setter Kelsee Barr.

Lake Dallas plays in the Guyer Volleybrawl tournament on Thursday and Saturday this weekend, and the Lady Falcons will host Gainesville on Friday to wrap up non-district competition.

Dentond. Frisco

FRISCO — The Denton Lady Broncos stumbled but persevered through a tough match and ultimately beat Frisco in five games, 23-25, 25-16, 25-11, 18-25, 15-12.

“It was a good test for us, a good example of our determination,” said Denton coach Heather Stewart. “We’re a week out from district, so it was good game for me to see how we could pull through.”

Amanda Hall had 24 kills for the Broncos. Paige Flowers had 34 assists while adding 11 kills, and Kelsey Cheatham had 13 blocks.

Stewart said that she was pleased with the way Denton held together, but that the team needs to work on always playing at a high level.

“We still have a lot to work to do to be consistent,” she said.

The Broncos upped their season record to 11-6. Denton next plays Thursday in the Frisco tournament.

Selwyn d. Fairhill

DALLAS — Facing an inexperienced opponent, the Selwyn Unicorns established dominance early and never let up for a 25-12, 25-5, 25-2 victory.

“They were just a young team,” Selwyn coach Shane Sykes said about Fairhill. “It was good for us, because we were able to pass the ball around a lot and get it to all our girls.”

Selwyn’s Ollie Anderson had 20 aces in the rout. Anderson also added 10 assists and six kills. Katie Lybbert had 12 kills, 13 digs and five assists, while Sarah Watt added six kills, six digs and six aces.

The Unicorns now stand at 8-3 for the season. Their next match is Friday, on the road against Wichita Falls Christian.
