Football: Liberty extends winning streak to six games
10:15 AM CDT on Saturday, November 3, 2007
COPPELL -- Liberty Christian continues to pile up points and victories.
The Warriors (7-2, 3-0) ran their win streak to six games by defeating Arlington Grace Prep 41-21 on Friday night at Buddy Echols Stadium in Coppell.
Over that stretch, Liberty has been phenomenal, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 242-50. And although Grace Prep (5-4, 2-2) was able to put some points on the board against the Liberty defense, most of those came when the game was in hand and the Warriors' starters were resting on the sideline.
The Grace Prep defense contained Liberty running back Reid Fitzgerald in the first half, but quarterback Andrew Loch stepped forward to take up the slack. Loch completed 17 passes for 246 yards, threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. Loch also had a 9-yard touchdown scamper called back following a Liberty holding penalty in the first quarter.
'A lot of teams we play try to stop the run,' said Liberty head coach Mark Bowles. 'But Andrew Loch does an outstanding job.'
Liberty moved the football on its first two possessions, but both drives stalled inside the 15 and resulted in Danny Gray field goals from 29 and 21 yards.
The Liberty defense held Grace Prep to a three-and-out on its second possession and forced the Lions to punt. Liberty took over at the 50 and marched down the field and appeared to stall again at the 10. But Liberty went for it on fourth-and-1 and Loch converted on a 2-yard quarterback sneak. Two plays later, Loch connected with Adam Smith for an 8-yard touchdown pass across the middle and Liberty led 13-0.
On Liberty's fourth possession, Loch orchestrated a 61-yard drive, completing passes to four receivers. And on another fourth-and-1, this one from the 3, Loch took the snap under center, dropped back, and then ran it in to his left, diving across the goal line for the touchdown.
At the end of the first half, the Liberty defense had held Grace Prep to a total of 26 yards and one first down. With Liberty leading 20-0, Bowles decided to get some of the younger players into the game. As a result, Grace Prep looked like a completely different team in the second half. The Lions moved the ball with ease, racking up 259 yards, including three long touchdown passes from Morgan Kenyon.
All momentum seemed to swing toward the Lions at the start of the second half, but when Liberty faced fourth-and-inches at the 50, Bowles went for it again. Loch followed center Jake Gannon and right guard Ben Habern for just enough yardage and Liberty regained control of the game. Two plays later, Loch threw a bullet on a slant across the middle to Smith who raced down the field for a 46-yard touchdown pass.
Loch connected with Smith for a third time later in the quarter, this one an 18-yard fade to the corner of the far end zone.
Liberty added another touchdown when Kenyon was forced out of the pocket and Mathew Hamel intercepted an errant throw. Hamel then raced down the field for a 35-yard interception return.
'Our kids did a good job playing defense tonight,' said Bowles. 'And Ben Habern is a force. He did a great job controlling both sides of the line of scrimmage.'
