Football: Melissa cruises past Aubrey
10:16 AM CDT on Saturday, November 3, 2007
Zach Williams passed for 218 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Melissa Cardinals to a 58-21 victory over the Aubrey Chaparrals at Melissa's Cardinal Stadium on Friday night.
The first half was a battle between two potent offenses with Aubrey playing again without quarterback Garrett Schoenky. Melissa opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal by Leighton Wilson after taking the opening kickoff and driving 38 yards. The Cardinals then widened their lead to 10 points when Charlie Cottrell intercepted an Aubrey pass and crossed the goal line after 48 yards of broken field running.
Aubrey cut Melissa's lead to three points by driving 45 yards with Rico Turrubiarte going in from the 1-yard line. Melissa's Alonzo Wise then returned Aubrey's kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.
In the second quarter the two teams scored two touchdowns each. Aubrey scored on drives of 61 and 57 yards with passes from Grant Henry to Billy Feathers for both scores. Melissa scored after drives of 63 and 71 yards with Ryan Morgan and Cottrell scoring the touchdowns. The half ended with Melissa holding a 31-21 lead.
