Baseball roundup: Ponder pulls even with Krum

08:23 AM CDT on Wednesday, April 4, 2007

PONDER — Senior Clint Crowell came up with a clutch hit, and Ponder pulled even with Krum in District 13-2A on Tuesday night with a 5-3 win. Crowell smacked a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, and Ponder pulled out a win at Lion Field.

Ponder (6-9, 4-4) started the day one game behind Krum (12-7, 4-4) and Melissa, tied for third in the district, and now they’re tied with the Bobcats but technically ahead of them by virtue of a season sweep.

Crowell went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI, junior Lane Loiselle had a 2-for-4 night with two runs, and senior Anthony Gallegos hit 2-for-2 with a walk and a run.

Ponder pitcher Jeffrey Specht held the Bobcats to only one hit despite striking out none to pick up the win.

“Jeff pitched really well,” Ponder assistant coach Kenny King said. “He came out and threw 50 pitches in the first two innings and then settled down and only threw 56 more the rest of the game.”

Next up, Ponder plays host to Anna, while Krum faces Aubrey at home — both games at 1 p.m. on Friday.

ARGYLE — Although Argyle pitcher Pat Dawkins tossed a one-hitter, the Eagles came up on the losing end of a 2-1 decision to Bowie in a District 8-3A contest on Tuesday.

Both of the runs surrendered by Dawkins (4-2) were unearned after the Eagles committed an error on a double-play ball that led to a two-run sixth for the Jackrabbits and ace pitcher Brandon Workman.

Argyle (18-4, 2-3) had five hits in the game, including a double by JJ Harp.

The Eagles will next play at Gainesville at 1 p.m. Friday.

The Calvary Lions opened district play with a win on Tuesday, pounding DeSoto Canterbury, 10-0, in a complete game no-hitter by Lion pitcher Addison McMahon.

“It was a great outcome,” said Calvary head coach Ryan Barnhart. “We haven’t played in awhile because of all he rain and spring break so they played really well.”

Sanger 19, Gainesville 1 (4)

GAINESVILLE — The Sanger Indians completely dominated Gainesville Tuesday night, winning a lopsided four-inning contest, 19-1.

Sanger (15-6, 4-1) dominated offensively with a double from Jay Herring and two triples from Ray Flores making up a fraction of the 18 total hits. Though Gainesville (0-5) managed a lone run in the fourth inning, the Leopards were mowed down by Sanger’s three runs in the second, 12 runs in the third and four runs in the fourth.

Sanger pitcher Hunter Poole improved his record to 3-0 while the Indians only allowed one defensive error.

“We did a good job hitting the ball,” Sanger head coach Brian Hart said. “The kids are doing a good job of going up to the plate with a plan. Hunter did a good job on the mound and we played solid defense.”

Sanger will host their district rival Decatur at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

“We focus on one game at a time, so if you’re focusing on Decatur on Thursday you’ve already forgotten about the big wins,” Hart added, “you’re more worried about the tough team on Thursday.”
