Football: Sanger drops shootout

10:19 AM CDT on Saturday, November 3, 2007

By Mike Landry For the Record-Chronicle

SANGER -- The passing combination of Bridgeport quarterback Cameron Green to receiver James Kilpatrick was too much for Sanger to handle as the pair combined for the three touchdowns late in the game to spark a come-from-behind 39-34 victory over the Indians at Indians Stadium on Friday night.

Sanger (3-6, 1-3) scored on its first possession of the game on a 5-play, 84-yard drive highlighted by long runs by both quarterback Tanner Miller and running back Trent Womack, with Womack going the final five for the score.

Bridgeport (6-3, 3-1) answered with an Antonio Martinez 34-yard field goal and then more or less kept pace with Sanger but couldn't seem to get ahead of the Indians for most of the game. The Bulls trailed the Indians at the end of each of the first three quarters.

Bridgeport, whose early scoring came off either the running of Aaron Holt or the kicking of Martinez finally began having success with its passing game and with Green hitting Kilpatrick for the first of three scores as time expired in the third quarter.

The 10-yard touchdown pulled the Bulls to within two of Sanger 28-26. Their next hookup came with 7:40 left in the fourth quarter and put the Bulls up for good 32-28. On the next series, Green and Kilpatrick connected again this time on a 43-yard pass and catch to seemingly put the game away.

The Indians were not yet through as Green coughed up the ball on the next possession and Sanger's Trent Womack returned the fumble 83 yards for the score, pulling the Indians back to within five.

The Indians held Bridgeport to a three-and-out on the ensuing series but Miller's desperation pass as time was running out was intercepted by Bridgeport to preserve the victory.
