Football: Broncos look to rebuild

08:17 AM CDT on Friday, September 3, 2010

Staff reports

After a heartbreaking loss to open the season against Dallas Woodrow Wilson, Denton looks to rebound tonight when the Broncos will travel to play Carrollton R.L. Turner at Standridge Stadium.

The Broncos will be looking for their first win since the second week of last season against R.L. Turner, which was winless last season and is playing its season opener today.

The Broncos (0-1) are led by new quarterback Dentton Hudspeth, who threw for two touchdowns in last week’s game and helped the Broncos rack up 328 yards of offense.

The Denton defense held Woodrow Wilson to just 291 yards of offense, and it will have to contain Turner quarterback Pete Galvan, who threw for nearly 2,000 yards last season while passing for 10 touchdowns.

Matthew Perry led the way receiving for Denton last week, coming up with six grabs for 90 yards and both of Hudspeth’s touchdown passes, and Darren Smith led Denton on the ground with 95 yards on just six carries, including a 76-yard touchdown run.

Lake Dallas looking for first win

Another team looking to bounce back after a tough loss is Lake Dallas, which fell 24-23 to Richardson Pearce on Friday after falling victim to a last-second field goal.

The Falcons (0-1) are working in new quarterback Dalyn Williams, who had his struggles in the passing game but was a monster on the ground, leading the Falcons with 155 yards on 23 carries, and found the end zone twice.

Next up for the Falcons is Red Oak (1-0), a team that beat North Garland 31-0 last week. The Red Oak defense forced five turnovers, including a fumble return for a touchdown.

Sanger looking to stay hot

With a 38-6 dismantling of Wichita Falls Hirschi last week, Sanger’s Dane Evans showed why he is one of the most highly touted junior quarterbacks in the state.

The Indians (1-0) scored all of their points in the second and third quarters as Evans passed for 292 yards and three touchdowns, while completing 68 percent of his passes.

Lake Worth (0-1) enters the game after a 27-20 loss to Bullard Brook Hill, a TAPPS school, and is led by quarterback Montana Chitty.

Aubrey aims to start strong

Aubrey will open its season looking to continue its success under legendary coach G.A. Moore when it hosts Plainview, a school in Ardmore, Okla.

The Chaparrals surged to a 9-1 regular season record last year under Moore and went three rounds deep in the playoffs before falling to McGregor in the Class 2A regional semifinals.

Plainview, meanwhile, finished 8-3 last season against teams from Oklahoma.

Argyle riding momentum

After a mild upset victory over preseason No. 2 Lovejoy on Friday, the Eagles will travel to face Mineral Wells, a team that moved down from Class 4A in February’s realignment.

Last week, Argyle (1-0) running back Layton Lowry ran wild on the Leopards, going for 151 yards and a score on 26 carries.

Mineral Wells (0-1) had a low-scoring affair last week, losing 10-9 to Graham.

Bearcats hitting the road

The Bearcats stumbled to their first loss in 16 games last week and will look to bounce back when they take to the road for the first time this season against Iowa Park.

Pilot Point (0-1) struggled in its 50-35 loss to Liberty Chris-tian last week, giving up 33 unanswered points while allowing 334 yards on the ground.

This time, the Bearcats will have to contain Lee Clubb of Iowa Park (1-0), who rushed for 1,071 yards last season and had 102 yards during his team 31-14 season-opening win over Pampa last week.

Lions set for first road test

After its historic varsity opener last week, Ponder will take to the road against Wichita Falls Hir-schi in search of its first-ever win as a full-fledged UIL member.

The Lions (0-1) gave up 21 unanswered points in a loss to Muenster after Reid Sanders’ first-quarter touchdown run.

This week, Ponder will take on a Class 3A squad in Hirschi (0-1) that won just one game last year and fell 38-6 to Sanger last week.
