Football: Indians pull away from Lake Worth

01:52 AM CDT on Saturday, September 4, 2010

By Mark Buford / For the Denton Record-Chronicle

SANGER -- Gage Hundley nailed a pair of long field goals and executed the key play of the game on the second-half kickoff as Sanger remained unbeaten with a 20-2 win over Lake Worth on Friday.

With the Indians (2-0) leading only 7-2, Hundley opened the second half with a pop-up kickoff over the front line of the Lake Worth (0-2) return team.

And while Lake Worth seemed unsure of what to do with it, Kyle Carrow knew. He recovered the loose ball to give Sanger a first-and-10 at the Lake Worth 28-yard-line.

Quarterback Dane Evans knew what to do, too. He moved Sanger to the Lake Worth 2 in three plays, including a 28-yard pass to Zane Paddack, then found Nathan Rotter with a 2-yard touchdown pass on third-and-goal.

That’s when Hundley ‘kicked in’ again.

Lake Worth punted on its next series, and the Indians marched 64 yards in eight plays to set up the first of Hundley’s two field goals, this one from 34 yards.

Key plays in the drive included passes of 22 and 15 yards from Evans to Paddack, who led all receivers with 75 yards on five catches.

After another Lake Worth punt, Sanger turned its third consecutive series into a score, this one a 41-yard Hundley field goal.

That capped a 12-play drive that started at the Indian 5-yard-line. Evans had a key 18-yard run and also completed four passes for 47 yards.

Sanger scored on the game’s opening possession, marching 77 yards in six plays capped by Evans’ 36-yard scoring strike to Jon Garza.

The Indians’ only other first-half scoring threat died at the Lake Worth 15 when an Evans pass was tipped and intercepted by Chris Alexander.

After an exchange of three-and-outs, Lake Worth mounted a 12-play, 86-yard drive to set up a first-and-goal from the Sanger 3.

But quarterback Montana Chitty couldn’t handle the center exchange and Sanger recovered the loose ball to end the threat.

Lake Worth’s only score of the game came two plays later when Chance Heiser sacked Evans in the end zone for a safety.

Evans finished with 18 completions in 34 attempts for 243 yards and two scores.

Neither team had much luck moving the ball on the ground. Lake Worth could muster only 57 yards on 31 rushes. Sanger didn’t fare much better, gaining only 78 yards on 23 carries.
