High school football: Calvary on to semifinals

09:31 AM CST on Monday, November 26, 2007

Staff report

Calvary head coach Dhati Lewis said he was more proud of his team’s 50-14 win Saturday against Bulverde Bracken than any other victory this season.

It wasn’t only because the Lions advanced to the TAPPS Division I six-man state semifinals. But poor weather and field conditions in Temple forced Calvary to adjust its game plan at the last minute.

The Lions (9-3) have thrived this season in a quick-strike spread offense, but were forced to rely on the running game and hard-nosed defense against Bracken.

The result: Calvary had more rushing yards (166) than passing yards (148) for the first time this season. And they limited the Warriors to only 99 yards of total offense while forcing six turnovers.

John Hudspeth ran for 129 yards and accounted for four touchdowns – two receiving, one rushing and one passing. Quarterback Will Orr completed just five of 19 passes for 98 yards, but ran for one touchdown and caught another.
