Sports Commission to hold annual banquet

01:33 AM CDT on Sunday, May 11, 2008

The Greater Denton Sports Commission will hold its annual awards banquet on Monday at the Gateway Center on the University of North Texas campus.

The GDSC will present scholarships and awards to athletes and coaches from throughout the county during the evening. The keynote speaker is former Cow-boys wide receiver Drew Pearson.

The awards to be presented include Male Athlete of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year, both for high school students; the Male and Female High School Coach of the Year; and Collegiate Coach of the Year for UNT and Texas Woman’s University. The Denton Record-Chronicle Youth Sports Volunteer of the Year will spotlight a community figure who has dedicated time to youth sports in the community.

The GDSC will present its own award for Volunteer of the Year, plus a Chairman’s Award.

Each high school in the county was eligible to nominate one male and one female student for the Athlete of the Year awards. A sampling of the local nominees is spotlighted on this page, along with selected accomplishments for each.

Each nominee automatically receives $100 in scholarship money, with the winner receiving a total $1,000 scholarship. Second place for both male and female divisions will receive $500, with $300 for third place and $200 for fourth. The winners in each category are voted upon by a GDSC panel.

A silent auction begins at 6 p.m., with the banquet to follow at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 each or $180 for a table of eight, available at the Denton Chamber of Commerce or by calling 940-382-7895.
