Basketball: Argyle boys roll to victory
11:46 PM CST on Tuesday, December 1, 2009
ARGYLE -- In Tuesday's blowout win over Fort Worth Paschal, Argyle head basketball coach John King saw a shooting performance so good that he had to ask the scorer's table just to be sure it wasn't a dream.
The Eagles shot 25-of-37 from the field, including an incredible 14-of-20 from long distance to erupt to a 74-41 win behind Clarke Overlander's game-high 24 points.
The sophomore guard, who scored 31 points in a win on Saturday, was red-hot as he led the way for the Eagles' big night from the floor, going 10-of-14 from the field and 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, where he drained his first six attempts.
King was left with what will be a memory of a fun night where nothing seemed to fall outside the hoop.
"It really was [the best shooting performance]," King said. "I just told them [after the game] that it was fun to be a part of tonight but not to expect it every night. It certainly was fun to be a part of this particular evening."
The Eagles (4-0) sprinted out to a 16-2 lead and led 23-7 after the first quarter as Overlander hit three 3-pointers in the opening frame and Connor York drained two of his four from beyond the arc.
"In the last two games he has really stepped his offense up even another notch," King said of Overlander.
In the first half, the Eagles were 9-of-10 on 3-pointers to open up the big halftime lead and didn't miss their first trey until the 1:23 mark of the second quarter. They came out just as hot in the third quarter to expand the lead to 30 points after three periods.
"I think tonight was one of those that Clarke just got off to a quick start and people just fed off of that," King said. "On the bench, every time someone shot one [a 3-pointer] they stood up and knew it was going in. It was just that kind of night tonight."
York finished the night with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and Taylor Ishee added nine points -- all on long-distance shots.
King said the thing that pleased him most about the game was the way his players stayed focused for the entire game, specifically on the defensive end of the floor.
Paschal (0-3) never led in the game and Argyle never let up.
The Eagles have made a habit so far this season of jumping out to big leads similar to what they did on Tuesday and letting the opponent back in the game.
But not on Tuesday.
"Our team so far this year has started every game almost exactly like that with a big lead and shooting the ball well while playing really solid defense to hold opponents down," King said. "Every game to this point, the second quarter we've had a letdown where we've let opponent catch up and our shooting isn't as good. I was proud of the kids tonight because they didn't let that happen. They stayed focused for the entire four quarters I thought."
