Basketball: Experience key in Liberty's blowout over Krum
12:04 AM CST on Wednesday, November 18, 2009
ARGYLE — Right after the opening tip, it was evident which team had more experience during the game between Krum and Liberty Christian on Tuesday night.
All five of Krum’s starters were making their varsity debuts. Liberty entered the game with already six games in the books while Krum was playing its season opener.
And after a big first half offensively and defensively from the Warriors, Liberty dominated Krum, 60-33.
“Krum was a little bit overmatched but they still gave a great effort,” said Liberty head coach Richard Scofield. “I think we have played a few more games and we are starting to make some nice progress.”
Krum’s inexperience also showed on the roster. The Bobcats (0-1) only return one starter (Kellin Harris) from last year’s playoff team. But Harris did not play on Tuesday night because he has been suspended by Krum head coach Lance Boxell for the first eight games of the season. He is also one of only two seniors on the team this season.
“It is going to be tough,” said Boxell, who began his first full year as Krum’s head coach on Tuesday. “We have a lot of guys that are not used to playing at this level and we are going to have to work.”
Liberty’s roster is loaded with experience. Four of the Warriors’ five starters played on last year’s TAPPS state semifinalist team and all made major contributions against the undersized Bobcats.
The Warriors’ best player on Tuesday night was guard Christian Scofield. The sweet shooting senior led the Warriors (5-2) with 22 points and helped spark a 10-0 run to open the game with a 3-pointer four seconds into the contest.
“Usually at this point in the season, our defense is ahead of our offense,” Richard Scofield said. “But so far our offense is a little more advanced.”
Krum struggled from the get-go as it scored only once during its first 10 possessions to fall behind 16-6 after the first quarter.
Scofield then got hot early in the second frame by scoring eight consecutive points, all on short jumpers, to help Liberty build a 25-11 lead midway through the second quarter.
Krum cut the lead to 25-14 on three free throws by Ryan Andrew, but Liberty, thanks to 3-pointers by Eric Heidelman and Hunter Dansby, scored the last 12 points of the half to put the Warriors up 37-14 at the break.
“Liberty is a great team,” Boxell said. “They jumped out on us early and we never could get into our offense.”
Liberty’s defense was just as good as its offense by holding Krum to just one field goal in the second quarter and just three in the first half. The Warriors also forced nine turnovers before the half and 14 for the entire game.
“We had trouble handling the ball,” Boxell said. “We didn’t score a lot tonight, but I am more concerned about our fundamentals than anything right now.”
Liberty didn’t slow down after halftime. The Warriors went on a 14-4 run to start the half and did not allow a field goal until the 4:43 mark. The field goal for Krum was its first in nine minutes, a drought that began early in the second quarter.
Led by Christian Scofield, eight different Warriors found the box score. Hunter Dansby and Luke Fife also hit double figures with 10 points each.
Andrew led Krum with 11 points and Luke Miller added 10 points.
