Girls basketball: Lady Chaps hold off Argyle

09:02 AM CST on Tuesday, November 24, 2009

By Matt Martinez / Staff Writer

ARGYLE — Fresh off its state final run in volleyball, Aubrey is quickly building up steam in another sport this season.

The Lady Chaparrals (3-0) went into Argyle and dominated the game inside the lane for a 49-42 win against the Lady Eagles (2-5) on Tuesday. Aubrey got 12 points from volleyball standout Jac Bullock, and fellow post player Sidney Karr scored 10 more and pulled down six rebounds in the win.

Guard Presley Stastny led the Lady Chaps out on the perimeter with 20 points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the three-point line, and Aubrey’s defense clamped down on Argyle’s perimeter-oriented offense to preserve the win.

Argyle’s Claire Pettibon scored a game-high 21 in the loss, but looks from the field were contested all night for the Lady Eagles. And when Aubrey had the ball on its end of the court, there was a mandate from head coach Johnny Hodge to get the ball into the paint.

“Inside we hurt them a little bit,” Hodge said. “We had a little bit of an advantage down there, but I knew they’d come back. Anytime we can come in here and get a win, we’ll take it.”

After Argyle grabbed a 13-12 lead to end the first quarter on two Miranda Laurion free throws, Aubrey raced out for the first nine points of the second quarter. Six of those came on possessions when the Lady Chaps went inside to Bullock early in the possession, and she delivered on short turnaround jumpers.

“I thought Sidney [Karr] and Jac [Bullock] had a really good game inside, and we executed,” Hodge said.

But while Aubrey was living on the inside, Argyle was consistently settling for jump shots. The Lady Eagles got just six points in the second quarter, all from Pettibon, and went into halftime down 19-13.

“Yeah, I did [feel like our offense was too perimeter-oriented],” said Argyle head coach Steve Schmidt. “But in the second half I thought we did a better job of driving to the basket. Aubrey’s really good at disrupting the things you want to do offensively. We usually have some girls that can get us going in 1-on-1 situations, but that never materialized for us.”

Aubrey forced six second-quarter turnovers and two more in the first two minutes of the third as they took control of the game. Foul trouble early on in both halves with Argyle point guard Colbea Harris and post Brittany O’Brien didn’t help matters either.

Both of the senior leaders picked up two quick fouls in the first quarter, and Harris had four before the fourth quarter started.

“No excuses, but that’s really not how we want to start a game,” Schmidt said.

O’Brien did provide a spark for the Lady Eagles in the third. She ripped away three steals on post entry passes in the quarter, but Argyle was unable to get points off the turnovers to start a comeback.

Most of the scoring in the fourth quarter came at the foul line, as both teams were in the bonus with more than seven minutes to play.

Aubrey did leave the door open for a comeback at times with missed free throws and turnovers as Argyle went to a full-court press, but the Lady Chaps’ half-court defense kept them in front down the stretch.
