Football: Argyle Eagles, Pilot Point Bearcats earn top awards

08:00 AM CST on Thursday, December 24, 2009

By Matt Martinez / Staff Writer

When a football team comes together and the result is a state championship, the individual pieces that made the unit that successful gain statewide recognition.

And after making that dream run this season, Pilot Point left its mark on the 10-2A All-district team after its first state title in 28 years.

Jarman Johnson ran away with the district MVP award after dicing defenses across the state for 2,978 yards rushing and 41 touchdowns. He averaged just over a first down every time he touched the ball, gaining 10.06 yards per carry.

That explosive ability certainly made quarterback Seth Tilley’s job considerably easier, but Tilley was no slouch, either. He earned the title of co-offensive player of the year with Callisburg’s Bobby Doorman after throwing 22 touchdown passes compared to just four interceptions and rushing for 13 more scores. The 22 touchdown passes ranks second in the area for a quarterback in Class 3A or below.

Pilot Point linebacker Justin Chambers shared the defensive player of the year award with Aubrey’s Levi Birdsong as well. Chambers came up large in some of the season’s biggest moments, registering an interception and two fumble recoveries in the state title game against Kirbyville, a 35-18 win.

Birdsong was a force for an Aubrey defense that did not allow a point in its first five games under legendary head coach G.A. Moore. Aubrey and Pilot Point shared the district newcomer of the year award, too, as Aubrey quarterback James Wurster and Pilot point offensive tackle Boone Feldt each burst onto the 10-2A scene to help propel their teams into the playoffs.

The District 9-3A all-district list was heavily influenced by the Argyle Eagles’ defensive dominance. Defensive tackle David Johnson earned the top spot on the list as the 9-3A MVP, a rare feat for a defensive player. The TCU commit led the team with six sacks and a staggering 25 tackles behind the line of scrimmage this season, while collecting 102 total tackles.

Teammate Jake Sizelove earned co-defensive player of the year after racking up 151 total tackles, 15 of which came behind the line of scrimmage. Argyle’s Alejandro Castor solidified the interior of the defense and was recognized as the co-defensive lineman of the year.

The Eagles’ Sam Forrer won offensive lineman of the year Sanger quarterback Dane Evans won the offensive newcomer of the year in 9-3A by throwing for 21 touchdowns and just eight interceptions as a sophomore, which bodes well for the Indians’ future.
