Volleyball: City players honored on 5-4A team
Lady Wildcats dominate district squad08:18 AM CST on Thursday, November 22, 2007
The Guyer Lady Wildcats had no trouble with District 5-4A, and they peppered the 5-4A all-district team — including nabbing four superlatives.
After going undefeated in district play and going four rounds deep in the playoffs, middle blocker Erin Garvey was named Most Valuable Player, Alyssa Hanley was named co-Hitter of the Year, Hannah Ingram was named Server of the Year and Jennifer Bramlett was named Coach of the Year.
The selections came a year after Guyer had only two players make the team in 2006.
“We really used last year as motivation this year,” Bramlett said. “It was nice they got recognized because I think last year was kind of unfair.”
Denton and Ryan pulled down a share of awards too. Denton hitter Amanda Hall was named co-Hitter of the Year with Hanley and Lady Broncos setter Paige Flowers was named Setter of the Year.
Flowers, a first team selection in 2006, won the award after guiding Denton back to the area round of the playoffs for the second straight year. She had 972 assists on the year along with 131 kills and 62 blocks.
Hall, the 2006 Newcomer of the Year, had 496 kills, 20 aces and 303 digs in 2007.
Ryan got two special recognitions. Senior Keidra Williams was named the Blocker of the Year after tallying 199 blocks on the year and adding 312 kills. First-year varsity hitter Stephanie Routh was named Newcomer of the Year after playing her best when in counted — in district play. She had 156 kills in 2007.
“I thought we represented the district well,” said Ryan head coach Cindy Williams. “We finished third and being able to get that many girls in those types of honors shows a lot for the program and the kind of athletes we have at Ryan.”
Garvey has seen her fair share of awards this season in addition to being 5-4A’s MVP. She was named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class 4A All-State team and will attend Nevada in the fall.
Hanley and Ingram rounded out a formidable front line for the Lady Wildcats as they had 304 and 228 kills respectively.
Denton had four other players make the all district team. Libero Maria Melendres and middleblocker Kelsey Cheatham were named to the first team while Jaime Riser and Mandy Muncy made the second team. Laurel McDonald was an honorable mention.
For Ryan, setter Kate Harrison and captain Sarah Telaneus made the first team. Co-captain Ryan Young made the second team. Ryan’s Maddy Taylor, Emily McCollum and Jenna Brown were honorable mentions.
Guyer setter Kaylee Fifer, who made the TGCA All-State team along with Garvey, was a first team selection, as was Megan Corbell. Kristi Hager and Kimmy Selier were named to the second team. Chelsea Ramos, Brooke Walford and Carrie Johnson were honorable mentions.
