Boys basketball: Argyle on brink of state tourney

Coach’s style has blended into program

ARGYLE — John King’s migration to Argyle has been as smooth as the Eagles’ transition game.

The former Arlington Seguin coach took over an already highly successful and talent-laden Argyle team in the 2007-08 season, and after tweaking the Eagles’ system to match his up-tempo style, King has the Eagles on the brink of a state tournament bid.

Argyle takes on Vernon in the Class 3A Region I quarterfinals at 7 p.m. today in Decatur.

“It's been a very good year,” King said. “We feel very blessed to be part of the Argyle family. My wife works for the school district and so do I. Our kids have been expected here. They’ve made an easy transition. Of course, success helps the transition be a little easier and we’ve been blessed with success.”

Success has been plentiful for the Eagles despite the coaching change.

Argyle has rolled to a 32-3 record and often run its opponents out of the building. The Eagles averaged 80.5 points per game in district play en route to an undefeated run to the district crown.

Argyle blew out Borger in the area round on Friday by 53 points.

“We just had to learn a new system,” said senior Josh Drake. “It’s different from the old one. We had to adapt to his system. The coaching styles are a little different. We play a little more up-tempo. Practicing is harder for that.”

When the season began, players had doubts as to whether the Eagles could match the success they’d had in the past. Former head coach Reggie Sain took Argyle to new heights and was coming off one of his most successful seasons with the team.

Sain was reassigned by Argyle athletic director Todd Rogers following the 2006-07 season. As a result, Sain left the school for Ryan.

“There was a time when we didn’t know who was going to be our coach,” said senior Cory Dixon. “I think everybody was a little worried. When we finally got our coach, it was a sigh of relief, but we also didn’t know how he was going to be. But it's been good. We’re obviously successful.”

After being hired, King's first order of business was implementing the fast-paced system that turned Seguin into a championship team. While Argyle certainly didn’t run a half-court system under Sain, it took an adjustment for the Eagles.

King decided his system would fit Argyle’s players well after watching them in the open court during summer league games. Faster practices, faster decision-making and faster plays eventually caught on with the Eagles, and their offense has been stellar as a result.

The Eagles opened the year with wins over Class 4A Denton and Guyer, but after their double-digit win over 3A power Princeton on Nov. 19, Argyle showed it had the potential to win state in the new system.

“After the Princeton game I think we started [clicking],” Dixon said. “We knew we could complete with the best teams in the state and we had a chance. Right after we beat Princeton, we really started picking things up in practice and in games.”
