Basketball: Argyle girls fall to Brock

12:04 AM CST on Wednesday, December 2, 2009

By Adam Boedeker/Staff Writer

ARGYLE -- Both teams on the floor at Argyle on Tuesday night were in Austin last year for the UIL state basketball tournament.

And both teams are in the same position they were in at this time last year.

Brock, the defending Class 2A state champion, won the game 50-37 to improve to 8-1 on the season, and Argyle (2-7) continued to struggle just as it did last season in nondistrict play before losing in the Class 3A state championship game.

"I'm almost a little concerned that they did it last year and think they can just turn it on in January and everything will be OK," said Argyle head coach Steve Schmidt. "But they gave a great effort tonight. It just got away from them a little in the second quarter."

Brock didn't take its first lead until the end of the first quarter and had a 9-8 lead after one, but the second quarter was Argyle's downfall.

Argyle had just one field goal and two Colbea Harris free throws in the quarter, while Brock put on the Kamy Cole-Kenisha Harris show, as the guard and post combined for 15 points and Brock turned a one-point lead into a 16-point advantage at halftime.

"There might have been a little bit of a drop-off from looking at the scoreboard [after the first quarter] and seeing we were hanging right in there with them," Schmidt said. "We just needed a few more shots to fall and they didn't. And Brock put the ball in the basket. It doesn't take much [for a game to get out of hand]."

Argyle outscored Brock in the second half and pulled within nine points on a Claire Pettibon 3-pointer with 2:40 remaining, as Argyle gave Brock fits with its full-court pressure. The baskets started falling for Argyle as the Lady Eagles sank seven 3-pointers in the second half to finish 7-of-14 for the game as a team. Harris led the team with 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from long distance.

But the guard picked up her fifth foul with 2:09 remaining and with Argyle trailing by nine. The subsequent free throws gave Brock an 11-point lead to cruise to the finish.

"I was really happy with the way we battled back in the second half," Schmidt said. "I really liked that energy and enthusiasm that we showed in the second."

Schmidt knew he would have to make Brock's outside players beat his team and not let Kenisha Harris and 6-3 post Paige Parliament win the game inside, and for the most part, Schmidt was happy with his inside defensive pressure.

Harris finished with 18 points but Parliament was held to two. Argyle was hurt by Brock guard Kamy Cole, who scored a game-high 20 points, including nine in the second quarter alone.

"We knew we would have to make them beat us outside," Schmidt said. "With our size, we just had to pack it in inside and swarm around them. We can't get a hand in every shooter's face. It's just not possible. Their outside shooters made the shots."
